THROUGH A LENS, CLEARLY : By Raffy Paredes
omorrow, December 21, 7 artist-photographers will be staging a collaborative photography exhibit at OWG (One Workshop Gallery) titled "Beyond Frames."
What makes this exhibit different? According to Ross Capili, organizer and curator, this "photography exhibit does not focus on gears, gadgets, fads, or the orthodox style of holding a show." When the artists got together to plan out the show, they agreed on challenging themselves to "produce conceptual images using any type of camera, any subject or statement, something unusual for a photography exhibit where one (usually) encounters only framed images."
As graphic artists-photographers, they sought to "produce the artist behind the camera," to focus on the "artists’ eye and vision" unlimited by his gear. So, they "set no rules," allowing for the pure expression of the artists’ thoughts and emotions.
Except for old colleagues, Ross Capili and Lex Kabigting, these artists had never actually met previous to their first get-together. Ross Capili says that he first encountered Estan Cabigas, Parc Cruz, Jeff Cua, Luis Harder, and Borj Meneses through the Internet. After the initial meeting, they spent the next three months preparing for the show. This combination of various artistic backgrounds and influences in one show also creates a distinct exhibit.
What makes this all the more worthwhile is that the show will benefit the World Vision Development Foundation, an international NGO (non-government organization) dedicated to the welfare and education of children everywhere.
All the art pieces on exhibit have been printed on fine art paper and use archival material to last for more than a century. Furthermore, discriminating collectors will be glad to know that the mounting and framing are acid-free.
"Beyond Frames" formally opens with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow and runs till January 6, 2007. The OWG, one of the topnotch galleries in the metropolis is located at 2241 La Fuerza Plaza II, Don Chino Roces Avenue cor. Sabio St., Makati City. For details, please call Ellen Capili at 819-20-74, 810-50-94. Website is at www.owgallery.com.
Do come and see how the 7 artists met their own challenges. The public is invited.

I would like to extend my personal gratitude to 3di PhotoClub for helping in the photo shoot of an NGO activity last Sunday, December 17. The club sent over Mayla Reyes and Sarah Encabo to document the launching of INAM Phils.’ Community-Based Recovery Program on Drug Addiction and Counselling in Paco, Manila. 3di’s effort to put relevance in their hobby is very laudable and stands as a model for other photo clubs to emulate. Special thanks to Clems de la Cruz, 3di club president.
