DESPITE A collision that robbed him of a chance of victory in the final leg of the Asian Open Karting Championship held on Dec. 15 to 17 in Macau, 15-year-old Marlon Stockinger of Team Birel Philippines wrapped up both the 2006 Asian Senior 125 Open and the Rotax Max titles.
Coming into the season finale, Stockinger had amassed a commanding lead in the Senior 125 Open Championship by virtue of his victories in the Malaysian and Philippine legs.
In Macau, the young Filipino was such a consistent frontrunner in the qualifying heats that he started from third place in the final behind Atsushi Takeda of Japan and Jorge Busato, a Brazilian driving for Hong Kong.
While fighting for position during the start with Takeda, Busato’s kart hit Stockinger and caused him to spin out with a bent axle. Stockinger rejoined the field in last position and worked his way up into 14th place, which gave him enough points to end up as the overall champion of the series, ahead of chief rival Johnny Afonso of Macau.
Other Filipino hopefuls such as Ivan Carapiet, also of Team Bireal Philippines, placed second overall in the Rotax Max class after winning the Philippine leg and placing fifth in Macau. Meanwhile, Fernando "Indy" Villalon and Daniel Cleak were both involved in accidents and were not able to finish the race.
"I am a bit disappointed that I could not make the podium in Macau this time," said Stockinger, the newly crowned double Asian champion.
"Everything was working well until Busato crashed into me. But I am very happy about the Championship title. We put in a lot of time and work on racing this year, and I want to especially thank my coach Othmar Stutz for all the hours and days he put into this to make it happen," he added.
Stockinger is now preparing for the 2007 Rotax Max Euro Challenge where he placed 12th overall in 2006.
He will be racing for the Swiss Kart Shop Team of Kurt Allemann. "I know I have a good team behind me and with all the experience I gained from last year I should be able to compete up front."
