2006's Best Beauty Products

By TATIN J. YANG

With the slew of makeup products out there, standards have gotten higher with every product introduced to the market. It is not enough that your lipstick be a flattering shade of pink; now, it has to moisturize your lips while nourishing it with vitamins and making it look fuller, treating the fine lines, plumping, adding sparkle and shine, and lasting the whole day after eating, smoking, drinking, and running a marathon. Such great expectations, and yet, the scientists at secret makeup labs have not only come up with products that deliver, but they also manage to add a little more that we didn’t realize we needed (and now must have).

Makeup on a wedding day must not misbehave and do any of the following: smear, run, cake, fade, flake, or disappear before the wedding and reception are over. It must withstand tears, sweat, heat, mini-dramas, and stress. The level of performance makeup must meet on the day of a wedding rivals the commitment the couple pledges to each other.

And so, we gathered some of the best makeup artists to poke and prod at all the makeup brands on hand, and after hours of applying and road tests, we finally came up with this year’s best bridal makeup brands of 2006.

FACE

Prep:

Shu Uemura, one of the best makeup artists of all time, believes that beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. If your face is a canvas, paint, or in this case makeup, glides on a smooth canvas better than on a rough one. Take the time to prep your skin before applying makeup. "Cleanse, tone, and moisturize" is the skincare equivalent of "to have and to hold" and "’til death do us part", so learn it, and learn it well.

Best cleanser: Cetaphil effectively cleans your face without stripping it of moisture, and has no added fragrance that may irritate the skin.

Best toner: Lancôme Tonique Clarté contains fruit acids from papaya (known to whiten skin) and pineapple for improved clarity and texture of the skin.

Best new toner: Pond’s Age Miracle Toner has CLA, a new anti-aging ingredient that goes directly to the DNA of your skin to reduce age spots and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Best moisturizer: Shu Uemura Depsea Therapy Moisture Recovery Emulsion is lightweight, but extremely moisturizing, this lets makeup glides effortlessly onto your skin. It keeps the skin hydrated without making it oily or heavy.

Best moisturizer for glow: Pond’s Age Miracle Cream applied on the face gives you an instant radiant complexion. It contains minute particles of shimmer that makes you look glowing and fresh.

Best sunscreen: VMV Armada Face Cover 45

This sunscreen is, hands down, the best sunscreen to have. It is very important to apply sunscreen even if your wedding is indoors because you will be exposed to photography lights, which also contain UVA/UVB rays which can harm your skin. Protect your skin against these rays by smoothing on a layer of VMV Armada Face Cover 45. VMV’s sunscreens are hypoallergenic and are suitable for even the most sensitive skin types. It also comes in higher SPFs for those who want hardcore protection.

Best eye cream: Preparing for weddings and sleepless nights go hand in hand, yet people expect the bride to look radiant and fresh, as though she hasn’t spent the last year and a half frantically arranging things. L’Oréal’s White Perfect Eye Protector effectively whitens dark circles and smoothes fine lines, making you look as if you just came from a relaxing day at the spa.

Best primer: Makeup For Ever ALL MAT Mattifying Base temporarily fills in fine lines and places a film over your skin to create a flawless base for your makeup. Makeup artists swear by this primer to make skin matte and satiny.

Foundation

Just like buildings that crumble because of faulty foundations, so too, will your makeup if you put on the wrong foundation. Of all makeup products, this is where you should spend the most because finding the right foundation for you is just as important as how you found your future husband.

Best Liquid Foundation: L’Oréal True Match Super

Blendable Foundation truly lives up to its name. It matches any skin tone and adjusts ever so subtly to mimic your skin flawlessly. It blends like a dream too, giving you ample time to smoothen it out. Coverage is light, but full. Best for normal/combination and dry skin.

Best Cream Foundation: Shu Uemura Nobara Foundation is typically used in Hollywood films for its wide range of shades, its creamy flawless consistency and long-lasting formula.

Best Cream Foundation for value: VOV Cream Foundation is every makeup artist’s best kept secret. Its shades are perfect for Asian skin and at only P395, is truly a find. It blends well into the skin and does not cake or smear.

Best Powder Foundation: MAC Studio Fix was unanimously chosen by makeup artists as one of the best powder foundations as it is long-lasting and provides good coverage.

Best Powder Foundation for value: L’Oréal True Match Two-Way Foundation is velvety and smooth without caking, blends seamlessly into the skin, making you look matte without being too flat. It comes in a wide array of shades specifically designed for Asian skin.

Best foundation for outdoor use: Cinema Secrets Cream Foundation for its staying power and how it adheres to the skin well. This is one of the best formulas for outdoor use because it doesn’t cake or crease.

Best for problem skin: Makeup For Ever Pan Stick is advisable for those with severe acne or pockmarks because it delivers full coverage without looking too mask-like.

Best for a dewy finish: MAC Hyper Real SPF 15 has pearlescent properties and goes on sheer. It is formulated to give the skin a dewy and vibrant quality and contains SPF 15. Best for normal to dry skin.

Powder

Powder cements makeup firmly on your face and is a step not to be forgotten if you want your makeup to last.

Best loose powder: T. Le Clerc Loose Powder in Banane is made from finely-milled French powder and is used widely by local and Hollywood makeup artists alike.

Best pressed powder: L’Oreal True Match Pressed Powder blots shine unobtrusively without looking pasty.

Concealer

Best cream concealer: Bobbi Brown concealer is heavy-duty and has not met any blemish or dark undereye circle that it cannot cover. It has complementary peach-toned correctors (for really stubborn dark circles) and warm yellow-toned shades for perfect camouflage.

Best liquid concealer: L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Concealer is truly amazing. If you must have one item in your kit, then this should be it. It conceals any dark circles and really melts into the skin.

Blush

Applying blush is the quickest way to look fresh and vibrant. Find the right shade and you’re sure to receive compliments and envious stares.

Best cream: BECCA Cream Blush is finally available in the Philippines and comes in shades to suit every complexion. Hyacinth is one of the bestsellers, making your cheeks naturally pink and dewy.

Best stain: Benefit Benetint, layered with your powder blush for a long-lasting blush that will keep your guests guessing. The color is suitable for all complexions and gives you a rosy glow that is sure to impress others.

Best powder: Shu Uemura Glow On Blush is by far, the best powder blush. You can't go wrong with its finely milled pigments and long-lasting formula. Bestselling shades include P Pink 30, M Orange 55, and P Red 14.

Best powder for value: Elianto Powder Blush in Hot Pink. This new brand is proving to be one of the best makeup brands to emerge this year with intense pigments at a price that is super-friendly to the consumer. This blush is super bright in the pan, but applied lightly, will give you a fresh, radiant glow.

Best blush shades for:

Fair skin: MAC Blush in Well-Dressed

Light to Medium: L’Oréal Blush Delice in Pink Grapefruit

Morena: Shu Uemura Glow On in P Orange 58D

EYES

Eyebrows

Best eyebrow filler: Shu Uemura H9 Formula Eyebrow Pencil in Seal Brown. This eyebrow pencil by Shu Uemura creates the most natural color for filling in eyebrows without giving you a harsh contrabida look. It fills in the eyebrows nicely and allows you to create a soft, subtle arch.

Best corrector: Makeup For Ever Waterproof Eyebrow Corrector. This high-performance brow filler comes in the most natural shades and is rub-proof and waterproof, perfect for big-day events.

Eyeshadow

Eyeshadows are like the hard candy of makeup, they come in all colors, shapes and sizes and are equally tempting. A good eyeshadow must have strong colors and ultra-fine particles.

Best powder eyeshadow: MAC Powder Eyeshadow. With one of the widest color selections, MAC’s superior formula is a favorite among makeup artists. Try Rice Paper, a soft peachy gold that is one of MAC’s bestsellers for brides.

Best powder eyeshadow for value: Elianto Powder Eyeshadow. Priced at P 99, and yet performs like most high-priced branded eyeshadows. It comes in over 44 shades and the powder is blendable and long-lasting. The pigment is unbelievably rich and smooth. This year’s must-buy.

Eyeliner

Best eyeliner: MAC Fluidline in Dipdown. This waterproof eyeliner is the most natural looking eyeliner around. Applied closely to the lashline, this instantly makes eyes look wider and awake and its long-wearing formula is simply to die for.

Mascara

Weddings are emotionally charged events and usually evoke buckets of tears. Your mascara should not go with the flow. Look for a waterproof formula that doesn’t clump or smear easily.

Best mascara: Maybelline Great Lash. Voted time and again as the best mascara in every glossy, this classic never goes out of style.

Best for lengthening: L’Oréal Double Extension Mascara. This mascara contains lengthening fibers to make short lashes look longer and more fanlike.

Best for definition: Lancôme Definicils. This mascara defines each lash, coating it separately to make lashes look thick and lush.

LIPS

Your lip color on your wedding day needs to be moisturizing and long-wearing while brightening your face. We applied tube after tube and kissed lip after lip until we found the formula that’s wedding-perfect.

Lipstick

Best pink: L’Oréal Color Riche Lipstick in Sakura Pink. This soft pink color moisturizes for hours on end and makes lips look soft and dewy.

Best wine: Chanel Hydrabase Lipstick in Vamp. Used on newlywed Nikki Orcino, she gushed about how this lipstick lasted throughout the whole night and brightened her whole face.

Best overall color: NARS lipstick in Dolce Vita. This shade is touted as the best flattering shade for all skin tones. It is the perfect blend of brown and pink and is perfect for a natural-looking lip color.

Lip Liner

Best lip pencil: Lip pencils used to fill in the entire lip will make your lip color last longer. MAC’s lip pencil in Spice has long been a bestseller because the shade is universally flattering and easily covers up lips darkened by excessive smoking.

Lip Gloss

Best lip gloss: L’Oréal Glam Shine delivers shine without being too sticky (think awkward kiss at the altar). Try Coral Juice, a nice sheer peach.

Others

Best eyelash curler: The Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler has had a cult following and rightly so. The shape of the curler mimics that of Asian eyes and delivers an even curl that catches each lash perfectly.

Best body lustre: Most wedding gowns are cut to reveal the shoulder or collarbone. Dust yourself with the shimmery radiance of Elianto’s Shimmer Puff. The shimmer is built into the puff and all you need to do is pat it onto your skin. Plus, the cute puff makes you feel ultra-feminine & sweet.

Best fragrance:

Agent Provocateur. This is the perfect fragrance to wear while walking down the aisle. Feminine, flirty and truly provocative, your new husband is sure to stick to your side the whole night.

New Brands to try:

Elianto, a new skincare & makeup brand from Malaysia is impressive with its wide array of eyeshadow colors, blush and lip colors. The pigments are ultra-rich at a very pocket-friendly price.

Patrick Rosas, a veteran makeup artist, has partnered up with G-Lish to create a makeup line featuring shades he commonly uses. The shades are sure to flatter Filipina skin and will give you that signature celebrity look Patrick is known for.
