Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales said yesterday that any resolution or promise to change one’s self this New Year is futile unless it is backed with a strong desire.
"It really depends on the will of the person. Any promise must be backed with a strong desire because without it, nothing will happen," Rosales said in an interview over Church-run DZRV (Radio Veritas).
Rosales said that change is also applicable to nation-building, the renewal of the Church, and priesthood.
"Even in nation-building, even in the renewal of the Church, priesthood, if there is no strong desire, nothing will come out of it. It’s psychological. You are what you desire," he said.
To help the people achieve their goal, the Cardinal urged the people not only to pray for it, but also give time to reflect on it.
"That desire must be with reflection. Do not just say something. You should really think and reflect what it is that you really want," he said.
"These must be done in a quiet place, and time for you to be able to weigh and also ask yourself: Is this what I really want? Is this good for my family, country? It should be like that, and not just merely say that let us all change," he said.
He also said although people may have different ways of reflecting, what is important is that they spend time to do it.
"Call it prayer, meditation. Call it by any other name, but do it. Weigh it in your heart, and see if what you are going to do is being required of us for the country to move forward. So we really have to pray for it," the Cardinal added.
