You are what you Eat: Joan Sumpio, RND

The long season of feasting (and fast eating) for the Christmas Season is over. Now let us see who did best with their dieting regimen. Did those who want to gain weight, add more body fats and pounds? Did those who wanted to lose weight, shed off at least two pounds of body fats in two weeks? Did those who wanted to be a little more muscular, got the bulk they need? Well, the way to know this is to visit your nutritionist dietitian or your trusted weight management clinic/center.

But weight is not the only indicator for good health, laboratory examinations of various specimen like blood and urine will make us see if we are able to maintain or put into good levels each blood constituent we are most watching out for. Thus, visit not only your nutritionist but also, your most trusted clinical/diagnostic laboratory to have a better picture of your health profile.

During feasting (over foods), the body organ that works the most is the liver. The liver is responsible for Carbohydrate, Protein and Fat metabolism. With such huge task, the liver holds about one pint (13 percent) of the body’s blood supply at any given time. The liver is the major site for converting excess carbohydrates and proteins into fatty acids and triglycerides. Excess glucose entering the blood after a meal is rapidly taken up by the liver and sequestered.

Later, when blood concentrations of glucose begin to decline, the liver activates other pathways which lead to the export of glucose back into the blood for transport to all other tissues. Incredibly, the liver regulates most chemical levels in the blood. The liver processes blood and breaks down the nutrients and drugs into forms that are easier to use for the rest of the body. More than 500 vital functions have been identified with the liver.

After knowing all these, can you picture how hard it is for someone with liver disease to be able to have all these functions performed by an injured/sick liver? Most people with liver problems have the great tendency to be malnourished. People with liver problems have poor appetite and for the purpose of up building their nutritional status, oral supplements will help achieve their needs for macro and micro nutrients.

There is a variety of supplements to choose from, the nutritionist or doctor is in best position to help you choose. However, for those with Liver cirrhosis, there is a strict need for a specific supplement, that which provides branched chain amino acids. irrhosis is a chronic condition of the liver in which the cells become damaged and scar tissue forms. Liver cirrhosis is most often caused by excessive alcohol consumption, but may also be caused by chronic hepatitis (such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C viruses), autoimmune disease, diabetes, gallbladder disease, or trauma.

There is currently no cure for cirrhosis; treatment is aimed primarily at treating symptoms and preventing or managing complications. People with cirrhosis of the liver may live longer, improve their liver function, have fewer hospital admissions and days in the hospital, and have an increased quality of life by taking supplemental branched-chain amino.

As we all aim for another productive year, let’s change our bad food choices and disease-inviting eating patterns. In doing so, we will be able to protect our liver from devastating (sometimes irreversible) damage. If you happen to know anyone who needs supplemental branched chain amino acids, write to myking012324@yahoo.com.ph
