Modesto’s ‘Manipulation of History’ opens at the Ayala Museum
spacer

Opening on Jan. 9, at the Museum Space of Ayala Museum is Fernando Modesto’s latest works in an exhibit entitled "Manipulation of History."

It may seem puzzling to see the connection between the paintings’ titles, as all are named History I, II, III, and so on. A number depict Modesto’s familiar field of pastels, of blues and greens. Some depict the faces of Buddha though they appear more to be generic shorthand for the familiar human form.

Religion/religiosity also often inspires his works. For years, they are bestowed to be mystical views of a divine invisible world the painter holds.

Modesto’s paintings in this exhibit chronicle personal experiences, travels, even wistful imaginings.

Fernando Modesto finished his bachelor’s degree in architecture at the University of Santo Tomas and went on further studies in Central St. Martin’s School of Art and Design in London. He was awarded the 13 Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and won prizes for printmaking by the Art Association of the Philippines. His works have been exhibited extensively internationally since the 1970s. His long residency in Indonesia was a turning point in the way he conceives forms for his paintings which has become more inward and reflective. This show somehow also marks his return to the Philippines where he is contemplating on settling back once again.

‘’Manipulation of History’’ will be on view at the Ayala Museum until Jan. 22.
