The Association of Southeast Asian Nations Mutual Recognition Agreement
AS an outcome of the meeting of economic ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Filipino medical professionals, specifically nurses, will have greater opportunities for employment with the adoption of an agreement liberalizing the entry and practice of professional nurses within the member states of ASEAN. The Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) was signed by economic ministers of the 10 ASEAN member countries last December 8, 2006, in Cebu City and was affirmed when the ASEAN leaders met at their 12th Summit this weekend.

A challenging sea
THE 12th ASEAN Summit, to paraphrase Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, exemplified "a caring and sharing regional community sailing through a challenging sea." The successful staging and hosting of the Summit by Cebu and the Philippines was in itself a saga of many challenges, from the building of the Summit site to the deferment of the summit itself by about a month.

The UN tilts towards Asia
IT’s been 45 years since the United Nations had its first Asian Secretary General, U Thant of Burma (now Myanmar,) who was named acting secretary general after Sweden’s eminent diplomat, and activist Secretary General, Dag Hammerskjold, died in a plane crash in Africa on a UN Mission.

Asian leaders make energy pledge, cut gas emissions
CEBU, Philippines – The leaders of 16 Asian countries have pledged at a summit meeting here to work together to save energy and develop new supplies in order to cut the continent’s reliance on expensive oil imports.

Does defiance pay?
THIS month appears to be the season for dishing out administrative sanctions against provincial, city and municipal officials for a variety of reasons. The most common ground refers to alleged violation of the anti-graft laws.

Off-beat scenes at Cebu Summit
CEBU, Philippines – Patriots can’t be protesters, Philippine officials say.

The disciples and the Sabbath

Graceano, el bohemio
THROUGH electronic mail, Hilda (a radio listener) chided me for not celebrating Graceano Lopez Jaena’s birthday last 18 December. As you dedicate most of your air time dissecting Philippine history, you of all people, should have remembered, scolded Hilda. More than the patriot’s birthday, a speech he gave in Barcelona in February 1889, was what led Hilda to send me that e-mail.

Angara’s hope
ANYTHING dishonest is by definition wrong, and any person who is dishonest is capable of doing anything immoral or illegal.

Election countdown
IT’s set. May 14 is the day of election in an election period that ends on June 13, which means that all the votes would have been finally counted. There will be 310,000 poll precincts, up from 286,000, to accommodate 49 million registered voters, more than half of an 80 million population. There are more Filipinos age 18 years and above than 17 years and below.

Selling a feud
BAYANI Fernando, chairman of the Metro Manila Film Festival, is a politician who wades into show business for six months of the year preparing for the festival. The experience has taught him enough to buy the line that nothing sells a festival or a movie or an actor better than a controversy.
