No to politics - Sharon
spacer

By KAYE VILLAGOMEZ

For the nth time, Sharon Cuneta turned down politics even when she received a lot of calls asking her to run for public office.

"I’m happy with being an actress and a singer. I know a few effective politicians who are able to make their constituents happy and I’m able to make people happy kahit hindi ko pa sila constituents," the Megastar addressed new political queries by the media during a press conference last Thursday for her "My Mega Valentine 2" concert to be staged at the Araneta Coliseum on Feb. 10 at 8p.m.

Although she has been asked to confirm and deny rumors of political intentions over the years for many times, Sharon disclosed this is the first time she was asked to join parties and run for specific public posts, "which really surprised me so what I did was call Ate Vi (Vilma Santos) and asked her, ‘Ate, gusto mo bang maging Mayor ng Pasay?’ She just laughed!"

She continued, "But I thought about it seriously and no matter how hard I think about it you really have to love what you’re doing before you decide on getting into it. Baka naman mamaya pag naging pulitiko ako, mga kakilala ko pa ang mga maipakulong ko, huwag na lang."

Sharon also said having a politician for a husband is enough. With public service being Sen. Francis Pangilinan’s turf, Sharon feels she doesn’t need to jump into it as well. "I don’t want to sound like I am campaigning for my husband but wala naman kami talagang ikinayaman sa pulitika. In fact when Kiko entered politics, he met with his family and made it clear to all of us that he wasn’t doing it to give favors. That’s why Kiko sees his restaurant (at SM Mall of Asia) Lamesa Grill, which he co-owns with his friends, as something we would do after retirement. He’s really good at what he does. He always says if we’re not going to fix the country, who will? I told him once huwag na siyang tumakbo pero baka kasi kumanta lang siya kaya sige na nga! Magpulitika ka na lang."

HURT OVER MOVIE REVIVALS?

Sharon revealed how she truly feels about the current generation reviving her movies such as "Dear Heart," the Sharon-Gabby Concepcion first movie to be reprised by Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz, according to reports.

"I’m speaking in general about how I feel about revivals. I feel bad about it when I hear my movies will be revived but I don’t own them naman. I’m very possessive when it comes to my work because I feel my fans grew up with the movies I made. I just happen to believe in the sanctity of my work and this is ‘Dear Heart.’ I remember director Danny Zialcita telling my Mom when he wanted me to do ‘Dear Heart,’ ‘If Sharon will not do this movie, I will shelve the project forever.’ Those words still ring inside my head," she explained.

Nothing personal though, Sharon clarified her ‘hurt’ had nothing to do with Sarah Geronimo, who also revived Sharon’s Dorina in the TV series "Bituing Walang Ningning." "Although for me I am Dorina and Cherry Gil is Lavinia, it’s not about Sarah because she’s a very nice girl. I was a judge pa nga when she won the contest that made her famous. This is not said with arrogance but with motherly love (laughs). Although, in fairmess to Sarah and ABS–CBN, they did ‘Bituin’ with a different attack and for that I’m thankful."

Meanwhile, Sharon informed her fans she requested for her guests in "My Mega Valentine 2." "There will be a lot of new songs and I really asked that I guest the APO and Pops Fernandez. The APO because I grew up with their songs and I love OPM; Pops naman is someone I haven’t worked with live on stage and she’s the Concert Queen, I recognize that. I hope to work with her more in the future."

Aside from the Valentine show sequel, Sharon’s "Isn’t It Romantic" CD under Sony-BMG turned triple platinum recently.

At 41, Sharon is hyper about filming for long hours again; looking into finishing three movies this year and eager to work with other showbiz superstars whom she missed working with despite close to 30 years in the business.

"I am very excited to do movies again and work with those I haven’t worked with like Ate Vi, Maricel Soriano and Tito Dolphy. I’m so into shooting that I feel like I’m only 20 years old again," she closed.
