Focuses on Manila’s ‘8-Ks’ program

Manila Inner City Development Committee Chairman Alejandro "Ali" Atienza urged barangay personnel in 897 barangays of the city to work with the agents of the Manila Police District (MPD) in solving street riots and gang wars in their areas of jurisdiction.
Atienza stressed that continuous patrolling and police visibility of barangay tanods in reported riot areas would curb the discord between rival gangs and fraternities who mostly clash in late hours of the night and early mornings.
The younger Atienza said that the violent disturbance of gangs and fraternities are some of the common complaints of residents in Ugnayan Bayan meetings held weekly in the six districts of Manila.
He also asked barangay officials to implement strictly the Citywide Curfew Ordinance to thwart riots.
Earlier, Mayor Lito Atienza issued an order to the Manila Police District (MPD) to arrest teenagers who are involved in gang wars based on the same complaints.
Atienza asked MPD Director Senior Supt. Danilo Abarzosa to arrest immediately those involved in riots to address the complaints of residents.
It was learned from several residents that the series of street riots are affecting the livelihood of street vendors who fear doing business at night due to the danger it poses to their lives.
Following the proclamation he will run for Manila mayor in the coming 2007 elections, Atienza said their camp will focus on the "8-Ks" of the city as their campaign platform under the Buhayin ang Maynila program.
Atienza said the 8-Ks include Kaayusan (peace/order), Kabuhayan (livelihood), Kalinisan (sanitation), Kalusugan (health), Kapaligiran (environment), Karunungan (education), Kaunlaran (development), Kultura at Sports (culture/sports).
Ali said the 8-Ks compose of the basic subjects of concern the city government needs to put attention as most issues and problems arise from the said subject matter.
The younger Atienza, who was chosen by no other than Mayor Lito Atienza to follow his nine-year legacy, said the 8-K will be their ticket’s slogan for the continuation of the Buhayin ang Maynila program.
"I’ll use my youth to continue my father’s projects and to serve my beloved Manilenos," he said.
Ali Atienza is the chairman of the Manila Sports Council and Inner City Development Committee. He is also the Presidential Assistant for Youth and Sports.
A graduate of Bachelor of Science Major in Physics at the De La Salle University, Ali Atienza was also known to be the first Filipino to win the gold medal in the Asian Taekwondo championships in 1993.
He also finished his Masteral of Arts in Government Management at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila last year.
