Houston, Wii Have A Problem!
spacer

Compiled by The Admiralty

Ever since the introduction of the Nintendo Wii in the gaming console market during the last quarter of 2006, enthusiasts and die-hard fans flocked to the stores to buy it. And just like its competitors, the Wii got a lot of attention and became a hit.

Although the Wii is gaining ground as one of the best consoles ever to hit the market, there were listed reports of freak accidents among owners and users wherein the culprit was the Wii itself.

According to the website (www.wiihaveaproblem.com), the accidents, both intentional and unintentional, range from broken glass windows to body injuries. Call it getting too embedded into the Wii game or plain stupidity, well, it really happened.

Here is a shortlist of several notable Wii accidents.

Wii case: DUDEWHERESMYCART of the Nintendo forums was playing Wii Sports: Tennis when the controller flew from his sweaty hands. The strap failed and let the remote go through his parent’s house window and out into the yard. Now the window has been boarded up. He’s currently grounded.

Our advice: He should try playing real-life tennis after his "grounding".

Wii case: We were playing Wii and drinking at a friend’s house whose parents were out of town. My friend wanted to play. She got drunk after only one drink. She swung the controller in home run derby and lost her grip. The strap broke. The TV cracked. The remote still works and I’m impressed.

Our advice: Drinking and playing Wii don’t mix. Enough said.

Wii case: I have a 27 inch normal TV in my room. So on Wednesday after launch, I asked my mom if I could use it on the 40 inch projection HDTV. She was like, ok what ever. So I was playing tennis and the Wiimote flew out of my hand with the wrist strap (yes, I was wearing it and it flew off with the Wiimote) and into the screen, cracking the 2 protection covers but not touching the real screen (thank god). Wow, I think that brings new meaning to "Look Mom! No hands!"

Our advice: The solution: Buy a new HDTV. The catch: You have to shell out big money for it, kid.

Wii case: "I decided to play the mini-game for bowling where you knock down more and more pins. I was sitting on my futon and I guess I swung really hard to knock down the 50+ pins and all of a sudden I realized my head hurt. I was wearing the tether and it did not fail. Instead of it flying wildly into the air it stopped and swung back around and hit me in the head. It instantly bruised; you could even see an L impression from the corner of the Wiimote, but soon the whole area was a giant swollen bruise (imagine a soda bottle top only bigger). After saying ‘how did I even do that’ fifty or so times I grabbed my digital camera to capture evidence of this amazing occurrence. I’ve noticed a lot of these Wiinjuries have been caused by people under the influence; I however was not. I was sober and it was just really funny."

Our advice: Buy yourself strong headgear with Kevlar and medical insurance.

Wii case: "Last night I was playing baseball on the Wii. Our son (Colin) is always ‘playing’ with us with a Bob the Builder figure in his hands. I took a full swing at the batting place and knocked my son with my hand on his head. My ring on my finger left a bruise on his head."

Our advice: Don’t let your little kids watch you playing Wii games.

Wii case: ""After playing some WarioWare we (my friends and I) decided to play tennis on Wii Sports. We took turns because of a lack of a second controller. One of my friends was really having fun and was about to close the match point. On his last return shot he sidestepped a few times to insure victory and was successful. But there was one small problem: he twisted his ankle while sidestepping. It hurt him a lot and he couldn’t walk; and it was throbbing. We check him and his ankle was really swollen. He went to the doctor and found out that it was a grade 2-ankle sprain. Ouch!"

Our advice: Never do spin tops while playing Wii.

There you have it, boys and girls. Well, these are just several of "reported" Wii accidents among its users. All of us love to play games with any gaming console. But please, don’t overdo it.

After all, it’s just a game.
