What is a Filipiniana-themed wedding? Funny thing is, you can’t find a clear definition anywhere, yet everyone seems to know what it is, and takes for granted that everyone else does too. Search for it online and you’ll find plenty of ideas and descriptions—but no definition. It would seem then that any wedding with a Filipino bride or groom or in which someone wears a barong is a Filipiniana-themed wedding. And certainly that’s not what it is.
So here is About Weddings’ offering: a Filipiniana-themed wedding is one in which a couple, whether both of Filipino descent or not, uses many elements inspired and influenced by Filipino materials (including native flowers and crops), culture, style and clothing, cuisine, history, and tradition. This blending of many things reflects the melting pot that the Philippines is—a place where no one is truly Malay, Chinese, or Spanish, but where everyone is Filipino.
But it’s not just in the details. We Filipinos, after all, are known around the world for our unique and heartwarming brand of merrymaking. The trick is to remember that while ‘Filipino’ does include all the superficial detailing that goes into wedding planning – the gown, the souvenirs, the food – it reaches far deeper than that. A Filipino wedding… regardless of its décor or its faithfulness to the traditions of old, becomes truly Filipino when it is planned with the same fun, fervor, passion and love for family that goes into our multi-faceted culture." So add this to the definition of the Filipiniana-themed wedding: it is one in which family and friends joyfully take part, contributing ideas drawn from their unique Filipino heritage (regardless of ethnical descent) to those of the couple to create a distinctive celebration.
