Most of the fatal victims of road accidents in Metro Manila last year were pedestrians.
A report made by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) road safety unit said 191 or 51.21 percent of the victims of road accidents in the metropolis were pedestrians while 137 drivers or 36.93 percent accounted for the other deaths.
Records also showed that 44 or 11.86 percent of those who died in road accidents were passengers of various types of vehicles.
The report also disclosed that the most number of fatal accidents totaling 124 took place in Quezon City, the central sector of the metropolis, while 93 deaths from road accidents occurred in the southern part of the metropolis comprising Makati City, Pasay City, Las Piñas City and Muntinlupa City.
Fifty-six fatal accidents happened in the eastern section comprising Marikina City, San Juan, Mandaluyong City, Pasig City, Taguig, Pateros.
Fifty-two other fatal accidents took place in the northern sector comprising Caloocan City, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela.
Manila, which comprised the western part of Metro Manila, had the least number of fatalities for road-related accidents with 46 casualties.
In non-fatal traffic incidents, 5,128 or 36.70 percent of the victims were drivers while 4,505 or 32.24 percent were passengers. In these accidents, 4,339 or 31.05 percent of the injured were pedestrians.
The report said the relatively high percentage of injuries to drivers and passengers should be a major concern for the agency and other traffic authorities.
In the breakdown of the types of vehicles involved in road accidents, cars accounted for 60,041 cases or 56.92 percent while jeepneys accounted for 10,960 cases or 9.32 percent.
Motorcycles accounted for 10,276 accident cases, vans 9,918 cases, taxis and FX vans 6,811, trucks 6,568 and buses 4,686.
A total of 114,163 vehicles of various types were involved in 517 fatal and 17,815 non-fatal vehicular road incidents in Metro Manila in 2006.
Records at the Land Transportation Office for 2004 showed that 67.80 percent of the registered vehicles in the metropolis were cars while 19.50 percent were motorcycles; 7 percent jeepneys; taxis and FX cabs; 4.8 percent trucks and trailers; and .9 percent buses.
The MMDA earlier listed Quezon City as the most treacherous place in the 17 cities and towns in the National Capital Region based on the number of road accidents that occurred last year.
Records at the MMDA Traffic Operations Center (TOC) disclosed that Quezon City accounted for 28.37 percent of the 17,292 recorded road accidents that took place in Metro Manila last year.
The same records showed Makati City as the second most dangerous place in the metropolis, accounting for 11.97 percent of accidents.
Pateros and Navotas, meanwhile, have the least number of reported accidents and are thus considered the safest localities in Metro Manila in terms of traffic accident.
