Lyceum marks anniversary as university
spacer

Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) celebrated the first anniversary of its grant of university status by the Commission on Higher Education.

Theme of the festivities was "Lyceum CREATES" (Committed, Research, Education, Arts, Technology, Excellence and Service).

Highlights of the celebration included unveiling of the new LPU marker and logo, the unfurling of the new Lyceum flag and the unscrolling of the theme banner at the school’s newly-acquired Licaros Building along Muralla Street in Intramuros.

Present during the celebration are

Technology; Fr. Gregorio Bañaga,
Jr., CM, president, Adamson
University, Dr. Leonardo Medina,
Jr., Dean, College of Engineering,
LPU; and Dr. Kate Botengan, VP
for Academic Affairs, LPU.
University President Atty. Roberto Laurel said that the dream of Lyceum being a university was first made in 1981 by his father, Sen. Sotero Laurel who was then President of the school. In 2004, the university status application was revived and preparations went full blast in 2005. On Dec. 28, 2005, a technical team from CHED composed of Dr. Carlito Puno, Dr. Saturnino Ocampo, Dr. Nona Ricafort, Dr. Hadja Misuarez-Umar, and Dr. Nenalyn Defensor, inspected Lyceum.

On Jan. 11 last year, the Commission, sitting en banc, approved and passed Resolution No. 005 x.200, granting Lyceum its university status.

The week-long anniversary celebration started with different exhibits on technology, tourism, books, and navigation. Different bazaars offering a range of consumer products also gave color to the campus.

The anniversary day itself had a parade around Intramuros, games which gave out valuable prizes to participating students and a gala dinner at Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

It can be recalled that, in 1952, Lyceum of the Philippines stood amidst rubbles and remnants of war inside the Intramuros. It is the only educational institution founded by a President of the Philippines, Dr. Jose Paciano Laurel.
