CLARK FIELD, Pampanga – Sheena Rose Teves and her new partner Lourdes Patillano got their acts together in the second set to rule the first leg of the 2007 Petron Ladies Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Clearwater Country Club here.
The pair from Asian College of Science and Technology dominated the frontline just long enough to pull off a 21-19, 21-17 triumph in their best-of-three showdown with Roseanne Barroga and Rowena Felices.
Barroga and Felices, two standouts campaigning out of Olivarez College in Parañaque, were forced to commit errors thrice early in the game as the ACSAT Lady Lightnings opened up with a barrage of placement shots.
With the Eastern Samar-born Patillano starting the second set with a wide return and an ace, the Lady Lightnings never looked back as they grabbed the upperhand with an 8-1 advantage
"Lamang sila ng first set. Kaya teamwork na ito. Habol sa bola and huwag pabaya," said Teves, who teamed up with Patillano for the first time after missing longtime partner Daphne de Borja.
Teves and Patillano, who took home the P10,000 top purse, struggled in the first set but still escaped with a 21-19 verdict in the tournament backed by Petron, Clearwater Country Club, Speedo, Armada Sports 70, Asian College of Science and Technology, Arellano University, Gatorade and Mikasa (official ball).
The champs, likewise, earned automatic seats to the grand finals in December.
Behind at 18-19, the Lady Lightnings snatched the lead, 20-19, after Barroga smashed her return shot to the backline and put a drop shot into the net.
Patillano, a computer science freshman, then lobbed in a placement shot to the side to force the win.
She and Teves fought their way into the finals after they squeezed their way past Arellano University bets Cherry Ferrer and Katrina Rimpillo, who held a twice-to-beat advantage over them.
They prevailed after pulling off a 21-19 edge in their first game, and then clinched a finals seat with a 21-18 verdict in the second.
Barroga and Felices emerged as their championship rivals after they waylaid information technology specialist Kristel Gepuela and advertising executive Kristine Ho, 21-12.
