Three ladies will represent the country in three prestigious international beauty pageants after they were crowned at the Binibining Pilipinas pageant at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City early yesterday morning.
Margaret Wilson, 17, part-time model, actress, and Music TV (MTV) video jockey, was crowned Bb. Pilipinas World. She will represent the country in this year’s Miss World pageant in Poland.
Anna Theresa Licaros, 22, a Summa Cum Laude broadcast communication graduate from the University of the Philippines who is now a student at the UP College of Law, was crowned Bb. Pilipinas- Universe. She will represent the country in the 2007 Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.
Nadia Lewe Cien Shami, 18, a parttime student, model and radio broadcaster, was crowned Bb. Pilipinas- International. She will seek the Miss International title in Japan.
First-runner up was Liezel Verses, while Abigail Cruz was second runnerup.
Wilson, who stands 5’9" and measures 34-24-35, impressed the judges with her answer to the question, "What is the one thing you cannot live without?"
She said: "My family. They will always be there, no matter what happens."
Licaros, 5’9" with vital statistics of 33-25-34, was asked to choose between crown and love life.
She replied: "Crown. It’s a once- in- a- lifetime opportunity, the opportunity to touch more people’s lives. I know that after I passed on my crown, my one true love will be waiting there."
Shami, 5’9 ½" and measures 35-2536, was asked about the language she wanted to study and why.
"I want to study Arabic. My parents are separated, and I want to go to Jordan and ask my father why it happened," she replied.
Licaros also received special awards such as Miss Bacchus Energy Drink, Miss Watson’s Woman Award, Miss Philippine Airlines, Miss Natasha and Miss Placenta award. The last award was presented by Jaime V. Acosta, president of Psalmstre Philippines, makers of New Placenta soap and other New Placenta skin care products, during the candidates’ visit to his office in Mandaluyong City.
For her part, Wilson also won as Miss Photogenic, Miss Ever Bilena, and Watson’s Style Icon.
Abigail Cruz was adjudged Best in Swimsuit while Contessa Maria Santos was named Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice. Manila Bulletin is one of the major media partners of the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant.
Other special awardees were: Melanie Adjarani, Miss Friendship; Liezel Verses, Best in Long Gown; Edfer Lyn Quintero, Smart Texter’s Choice; and Shiela Alonso, Miss Talent.
At least 30 candidates competed in the most prestigious beauty pageant in the country. Other candidates who made it to the semifinals were Adjarani, Quintero, Keann Mallari, Angeline Tucio, Luisa Beltran, Theofeliz Marie Francisco, Jamie Burgos, and Nicole Schmitz.
This year’s pageant judges included Education Secretary Jesli Lapus, Japanese Ambassador Yujiro Yamasaki, Samie Lim, president, Philippine Chamber of Commerce; businessman Aurelio Ang; actors Robin Padilla and Alfred Vargas; TV host Vicky Morales, actresses Ruffa Gutierrez and Charlene Gonzalez, and Miss International 2006 Precious Lara Quigaman.
