Second childhood: Playsuits and Crayola brights

Daryl Chang

LAST night, as I was lazily browsing through the multi-pages of various favorite web haunts, my laptop pulled a very Carrie Bradshaw moment on me, it went out on a blink. And the silence that followed was as loud as it was if it did go out with a bang. No amount of forced restarts could bring it back to life. All I could do was resign myself to the fact that I could really lose everything.

And that’s because the technologies that are supposedly making my life easier are, in fact, making it harder by not working. But I used to live in a world without all these, and life back then was much simpler. Texts were words spelled correctly, meetings would be set a day, and not 30 minutes before, and I don’t have to compulsively check my emails and networking pages every other hour.

This season of the sun brings us back to our carefree summers when we were still young and our worries tend to run only up to the extent of how fast time flies and suddenly it’s back to school again.Dresses are simple and easy to wear and perfect for those smoldering days when jeans are just too clingy and tees are just too boring. I personally like the delicate caress of a billowing and looser silhouette, it makes me feel smaller plus it’s much more comfortable to move around in. Childlike uniforms such as pinafores, mod shifts, trapeze silhouettes, swingy blousons and smocks are so totally on trend as THE dresses of summer.

Playsuits or one-alls are also kid-inspired fashion that’s crossing over to the adult world. But overalls have been used as early as the 1920’s and have been reinvented in every era from the provocative outfits of the sexy ‘50s pin-up girls, to the sultry deep-V disco pantsuits of the ‘70s. For Summer 2007, jumpsuits are the season’s easy slip-ons. I personally like tailored jumpsuit shorts, with the crisp shirt fronts and the shorts with the creased and folded hem. Very relaxed, hip and oh so chic. But, be warned, it’s unforgiving, as styles tend to lean more on the body-conscious side than on the voluminous.

Bring out your Crayons because Spring is this season’s coloring book. Styles are saturated with bold, basic brights. M&M colors inject a California-sized helping of slick sunshine pop into a scene wanting to have fun. Red is the color of anger as it is the color of life. Bright red is the center of every target and it is used to aggravate bulls in every Spanish bull fight. Blue is the color of royalty. It is said to be a noble’s lineage and blood. From the satellite above the earth, the planet is mostly blue. Blue eyes are the most stunning of all. Yellow is the submarine as well as the ribbon tied around the old oak tree. It’s the color of happiness as well as the color of the original smiley face. Yellow is mellow as it is a warning. Yellow is gold and we live by the golden rules. Red, blue and yellow are the key colors of this season, so what are you waiting for, let’s hop, skip and go paint the world!

Fierce, fashionable style savants!! I’d like to see what you’re wearing! My addie: stylemaven_01@yahoo.com.
