Incumbent Pampanga Rep. Mikey Macapagal-Arroyo, eldest of the First couple’s three children, is not expected to be strongly challenged as he launches today his bid for a second term as congressman of the second district of the province.
Citing his many legislative accomplishments as his badge of honor in gunning for re-election, the young Arroyo will file today his certificate of candidacy for congressman at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) provincial office in San Fernando City, Pampanga.
Most of the barangay and local government leaders in the five towns comprising the second congressional district aired the belief that the solon stands as a highly favored candidate and is expected to win another term.
A former vice governor of the province, Mikey said he would remain active during the campaign period by meeting with his kabalens and presenting to them his many achievements and accomplishments in the 13th Congress.
Included in his legislative track record is his successful defense of the budget proposals of five government agencies, including the Presidential Commission Against Graft and Corruption (PAGC) since 2004.
During the 2007 national budget hearings, Arroyo sponsored PAGC proposed expenditures without any questions from the minority bloc.
He also co-authored 96 legislative measures, including the fiscal reforms program initiated by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Arroyo said he would use the campaign period to consult with residents of Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Porac and Sasmuan on what more he can do to serve them as their representative in Congress for the second term.
"Magsasagawa tayo ng mga pagpupulong sa barangay upang malaman natin kung ano ang mga karaingan at pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan. Gagamitin natin ang panahon ng kampanya para makuha ang saloobin ng taumbayan kung ano ang dapat gawin ng kanilang kinatawan sa Kongreso," Arroyo said. (We will conduct barangay meetings to determine the problems and needs of my constituents. I intend to find out what else they want me to do as their representative in Congress.)
Arroyo also thanked his constituents for giving him the opportunity to be their voice in the House but pledged to work harder to recompense them for their support of his candidacy.
