EXACTLY THREE weeks before the fight, Manny Pacquiao is so juiced up in training at the Wild Card in Hollywood that his trainers are seriously considering to cut back on his sparring sessions.
Even after going 10 rounds with three sparmates on Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning in Manila), Pacquiao still wanted to "hit the mitts", the fighter’s Canadian adviser Mike Koncz told the Bulletin yesterday.
Wild Card regulars had initially feared that Pacquiao would need a couple of days to get back into form when he arrived in Los Angeles on the night of March 17, but the 28-year-old lefty, who faces undefeated Mexican Jorge Solis on April 14 in San Antonio, Texas, proved them wrong.
Since reporting for duty last week, Pacquiao has sparred 26 rounds aside from the 50-something rounds that he racked up while working out in his hometown of General Santos City from the third week of February until mid-March.
"Everything’s been very good here with Manny," said Koncz, who regularly watches the training being supervised by Australian conditioning coach Justin Fortune, the right-hand man of Freddie Roach, and training assistants Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri.
"Manny’s really very focused (on this fight)," said Koncz.
Koncz said the itinerary of Pacquiao in the final two weeks leading to the brawl at the Alamodome will be known after he travels to Las Vegas to meet with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum on Monday.
"I would be discussing with Bob the details of Manny’s trip to Texas and some other things," said Koncz. "I would know if Manny is taking (a) commercial (flight) or will be provided with a private jet."
The trip from Los Angeles to San Antonio is about two hours and 30 minutes if it is non-stop.
It is believed that Pacquiao will head to San Antonio at least a week before the fight to fulfill his promotional obligations such as appearing in an open workout and press conference and other pertinent affairs relative to the event.
Pacquiao is heavily favored to repulse the challenge of the rangy Solis, who is training diligently in the mountains just outside of Mexico City.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao and Solis are scheduled to meet for the first time on Wednesday or Thursday to drumbeat their much-awaited tiff.
Solis encountered visa problems last week and was unable to attend two press conferences in Los Angeles and San Diego.
"It’s better to have this problem now than in the days close to the fight," said Top Rank publicist Ricardo Jimenez.
