PLANNING MATTERS

One, two, three…Click!: Capturing the memories

"A picture paints a thousand words"…so the song goes. Weddings fly by, so it is important for someone to capture those special moments. Photos preserve all the emotions—excitement, joy, and laughter—and memories for everyone to remember long after the day has passed.

Good photography is more than just having a good set of professional cameras, clicking or snapping on an auto-focus less. Photography is an art. So how do you choose your wedding photographer?

You should be specific about what you want. Check out their websites and photo galleries, and know their styles. Do you want a series of candid shots or a photographic record, or a combination of both? There are dozens of styles to choose from; photographers can specialize in portraits, photojournalism, and reality or candid photos.

What should you ask your prospective photographer? Here is a list of questions to help you choose.

1. How long have they been in the business?

2. What is the specialization of the photographer? Is s/he a wedding photographer?

3. Do they freelance, or do they have their own studio?

4. Can you see their samples or previous work? (Check out printed albums and the resolution of their pictures)

5. Do they have packages? If so, then what are their rates, and what does each package include? Some photographers include portrait frames, a special parents’ album, or sign frames or books in their packages. Do they have any additional fees, such as out-of-town charges? How many shots will he plan to take? What are the costs for additional photos, album, etc?

6. How many cameras or photographers will there be on your wedding day?

7. Are wedding portraits before and after the wedding included in the package? Are there additional charges for out-of-town shoots?

8. How soon can they give you the proofs of the pictures and the layout of album? How long will it take to deliver the album?

9. Will they give you a copy of the negatives or raw pictures, or will they keep the negatives or files? If so, then for how long?

Those are just some guidelines to help you choose the right photographer for your wedding. Some opt to have 2 sets of studios to cover their wedding, but a prior meeting with both studios is a must in order to avoid conflicts or disruptions to the spontaneity of the wedding.

Each photographer is unique… they have the eye for capturing one moment in so many ways and from so many perspectives. Do you want somebody invisible or someone who makes people to smile or pose? You have to look for someone who makes you feel comfortable; someone who is willing to work with you every step of the way. There are hundreds of photographers out there, so choose someone who will not interfere with the natural course of the ceremony or the reception. S/he should be able to capture the spontaneous flow of the wedding.

After you have chosen your photographer, set a meeting and make sure you discuss your photographic wants, needs, and expectations. It is important to establish a good relationship well before the big day so that everybody will be comfortable with each other.

The personality of the photographer is just as important in your decision as the quality of photography. The choice depends on your own style and budget, of course.

As all soon-to-wed couples are beautiful, just smile away. Don’t let one moment go to waste; capture it in photos that keep memories alive, because memories mean more than just a thousand words.
