Malacañang announced yesterday that President Arroyo will travel to Japan, New Zealand and Australia next week.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the President will travel to these three countries to enhance bilateral economic and trade relations. Ermita said the President will first travel to Tokyo, Japan on May 22 until 25, mainly to attend the annual Nikkei conference.
During her weeklong trip to Tokyo, the President will also meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, several businessmen and the Filipino community.
On May 27, the President will fly to Wellington, New Zealand to expand trade and economic tourism cooperation. She is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, who has actively supported the Arroyo government’s efforts to protect the environment.
Mrs. Arroyo will also attend the third meeting of the Asia- Pacific Interfaith Religious Dialogue at Waitangi, New Zealand from May 29 to 31. The Philippines is a co-sponsor of the interfaith forum aimed at promoting religious understanding to address conflicts and extremism in the region.
From New Zealand, the President will proceed to Australia for a two-day state visit, upon the invitation of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, starting May 30.
This is the first time a Philippine president will visit Australia in 12 years.
Mrs. Arroyo also seeks to woo more investments for the country when she meets with business leaders in Australia, according to Ermita.
Next month, the President is tentatively scheduled to return to Rome, Italy and China. No details have yet been given about these trips. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
