World Telecommunications and Information Society Day
WORLD Telecommunication Day is celebrated annually on May 17, marking the founding of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. Since the advent of the telegraph in the mid-19th century, the International Telecommunication Union has played a key role in world communications. It continues to provide governments, the private sector, and civil society with guidance and assistance in addressing issues related to information and communication technologies.

ADB must change, but how?
WHEN you get 3,000 delegates from 67 countries at varying stages of development in one room, it is hardly surprising when they fail to reach an accord. This is what happened at the annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank in Kyoto on May 7th. That Asia itself is changing rapidly there is no doubt, and ADB’s president Haruhiko Kuroda, feels that the bank must adjust accordingly. Originally founded to tackle poverty through economic development, poverty levels have been falling as the region’s economic development has spiraled and Kuroda told the conference that economic success, not pervasive poverty, was the newest regional concern. ADB projects that extreme poverty will be almost wiped out in Asia within 15 years. Recommendations for enlarging the bank’s focus include concentrating more on sustainable growth, and environmentally friendly development. Creating jobs for the 1.9 billion Asians who still qualify as poor will be the key to sustainable development. But this requires, in addition to job creation, better educational facilities and healthcare systems and transparent governments, according to President Kuroda.

Constitution Day of Norway
NORWAY celebrates its Constitution Day today.

The stars flicker & dim
ACCORDING to my source, a veteran and senior café analyst, the first movie star to try his luck in politics was Pol Salcedo, the movie king of the ‘40s and ‘50s. Pol was the contemporary of another wellknown "star" in the movie firmament, Fernando Poe Sr.

Awesome options
WE often forget that we do have two options, both of them awesome.

Baby steps
IF the unofficial and partial election results turn out to be accurate, then we must be taking baby steps to political discernment and maturity. Virgilio Garcillano, ex-Comelec commissioner, conceded defeat even before official counting had begun in Bukidnon. Handsome hunks and super stars Richard Gomez and Cesar Montano are nowhere near the magic twelve circle. Senator Lito Lapid knew what was coming so neither he nor his horse bothered to campaign against incumbent Mayor Jejomar Binay in Makati City. His son Mark who ran for governor of Pampanga is doing just as poorly in their own bailiwick. Pugilist Manny Pacquiao, the Philippines’ current icon and pride, must be devastated at being knocked out, in the very first round, by the frail but feisty Darlene Antonino Custodio.

Global competitiveness
GOOD institutions and competent macroeconomic management, coupled with world-class educational attainment are a successful strategy for boosting competitiveness in the global economy, according to the Global Competitiveness Network.

It isn’t over yet!
AN old Chinese joke from Feng Mengko: Xiao Fu told of a chess-player who thought highly of himself. On one occasion, he lost three games in succession, but when asked the next day how he came off, he replied: "Well, I didn’t win the first game, and my opponent didn’t lost the second. As to the third game, we didn’t finish it. I asked him to settle for a draw, but he refused."

Win some, lose some
HURRAY for Manny Pacquiao, the biggest loser!
