Susie Bonaobra

A solid foundation to a lasting relationship is a common passion for one thing. Their love for bridal gowns was what fused together twelve designers and motivated them to form what is now known as the Wedding Designers Association of the Philippines.

Founder Joel Bautista envisions the association to be a blend of artistic creativity and solid business sense. "We never repeat our designs, and we make sure that the bride is 100% involved in the design process."

The association provides brides with well-written contracts and guarantees that each gown created for her is unique, well-crafted, and delivered on time.

For this issue, About Weddings focuses on charming designer Susie Bonaobra

What is your signature design?

My design motto is "elegance in simplicity." My gowns are usually simple in terms of cut and fabric but are complimented by intricate and detailed beadings.

What is your ultimate goal with regards to your career and personal life?

My everyday challenge is to be a good provider to both my clients and my family. In the next 5 years, I’d like to open more branches of my shop and at the same time, still be able to spend quality time with my family.

What inspires you?

It’s a very elating experience whenever couples come back to me and share how happy they were with my work. Being a contributing factor in making one of their lives’ most important events memorable is a constant motivation for me.

What is your design philosophy?

I keep in mind that I have to do my best every time. On top of that, I recognize that there is always room for development.

Who are designers who inspire you?

Vera Wang, because she initially specialized in bridal gowns but has gone a long way and is now also into fragrance, jewelry, eyewear, and shoe and houseware collections. Also, Monique Lhuillier, because she helps make Filipino talent recognized worldwide.

Who is your greatest influence?

My mom has taught me a lot. I consider her feat of running a successful business and keeping a tightly-knit family an inspiration.

List the first 3 items you’d pack in your suitcase regardless of where you’re going.

I always want to observe and appreciate beauty, which is why I’d bring my eyeglasses, my contact lens, and my contact lens cleaning kit.

What do you wear now that you aren’t likely to be wearing 10 years from now?

Body hugging t-shirts.

What concessions do you make for age?

I actually don’t mind my age that much. No matter how old I get, I’d want to be able to say that I lived my life to the fullest and didn’t regret anything that happened.
