CARMEN, Cebu – At least two persons died and several others were injured when a cliff suddenly collapsed while they were swimming in a waterfall at Sitio Mangitngit, Barangay Lower Natimaw-an, this town yesterday afternoon.
Senior Police Officer 1 Joselito Hopia of the Carmen police station said the landslide killed Cristine Beduya and an unidentified woman, and injured at least 10 of Beduay’s friends and relatives who converged in the area, around three kilometers from the town proper, for swimming at past 1 p.m. yesterday.
Most of the wounded were taken to the Carmen Community Hospital and the Danao District Hospital.
Hopia said physicians at the Carmen Community Hospital declared Beduya dead on arrival. Beduya’s body was retrieved from the piles of earth and boulders, Hopia said.
The injured victims included as Jennivy Beduya, 18, and Jonathan Alfahura.
Hopia said the names of the other injuries were not available as of yesterday afternoon. Hopia could not tell if there were still people trapped underneath the rubble.
Cynthia Alfahura, 17, one of the survivors, said her family and relatives went to the area for a swim at past 1 p.m. last Thursday, considering that the Mangitngit Falls is well known in the town for its cold, clean, and pristine waters.
Alfahura said some of her relatives noticed small stones falling off the steep hill above them, but they ignored it and went on swimming.
At past 3 p.m., Alfahura said the ground suddenly moved, and she heard rumblings from the cliff above them.
"My relatives told us to run. When I looked back, I saw the pile of land and boulders already covering the area where we were swimming," said teary-eyed Alfahura who survived without a scratch.
As of yesterday afternoon, the rescuers were still digging into the pile of earth and boulders to see if there were still people underneath.
SPO1 Hopia said members of the group of Beduya and Alfahura were already accounted for but there were reports that there were other groups who were also swimming in the area when the landslide took place.
Hopia said it was the first time that a landslide took place in the area. He noted that in the past three days, there was no rain in the area. Rains usually trigger landslides.
