Rom Feria

Not too long ago, I wrote about various sources of news and tutorials about Java technology but I missed out featuring the podcasts and vodcast/video podcasts. For those of you who fancy hearing technology related news and commentaries on your favorite portable media device, then here’s a short rundown of what’s available on the iTunes store.

First is the Sun Developer Network TV Channel (SDNtv), a video podcast hosted and produced by folks from Sun Microsystems, Inc. Whilst this is not exclusively devoted to Java (features other Sun technologies, too), its coverage of Java practically may earn it the monicker JavaTV instead. :) Being produced by Sun, you cannot expect third-party, independent commentary about the shortcomings of Java but that does not diminish its usefulness.

Following SDNtv, Sun also produces the Java Mobility Podcast, obviously aimed for mobile and embedded devices. This new podcast is presented by Sun engineers Roger Brinkley and Terrence Barr. If you want to know more about phoneME, JavaFX Mobile, SunSPOTs and other cool applications of Java on devices, this is an invaluable source for you.

Netbeans fanatics should have heard of Roman Strobl, if not, how dare you? Haha. Just kidding. Anyway, Roman is the Netbeans guy who provides tutorials and screencasts on how to use Netbeans. The last one that I saw before leaving for Netbeans Day last May was about Netbeans 6, where Roman demonstrated how Netbeans can now be used to develop Ruby on Rails applications. Cool, huh? So, if you want to hear more great news about Netbeans (and Java, too), this is the one for you.

And saving the best for last... yeah, the best of the lot is none other than JavaPosse. Sing with me - "Java, Java, Java Java Jing-jing- jing" The jingle alone is enough to get you hooked! (My kids are so familiar with it that they correct me whenever I intentionally sing it incorrectly! Java kids!) Anyway, JavaPosse is one of the longest running, currently at episode 124, Java technology oriented podcasts. Manned by four folks namely, Tor Norbyte of Sun Microsystems, Carl Quinn and Dick Wall of Google and Joe Nuxoll of Apple, Inc. What makes this podcast great is that they talk about the flaws of both the language (closures anyone?) and the technology (why is the JRE so damn huge?), in addition to talking about what is great about Java, of course. They give you two sides of the coin. :)

I happened to be in the audience in one of the podcasts, episode 119, that was recorded during CommunityOne, the event before JavaOne 2007. In that episode, the audience did the singing before the podcast started! How cool is that? I tell you, there is nothing more fun seeing these guys talk about the technology. Heck, I even snapped a photo of that event.

So there - a line up of podcasts that will help you learn more about Java technology. If you know of other podcasts, please do let me know.

Cya next week!
