Cooking Diva Sings the Asian Fusion Theme
spacer

YUGEL LOSORATA

The fusion of Asian cultures is effective in the life of lady cook Susan Quah Quinico. No wonder she’s been singing such a theme to the delight of people dropping by her kitchen.

The fondly called Spicy Susan was born Singaporean, and is now married to a Filipino. She has put up her own restaurant carrying the Asian fusion tune which is a mix of Malay and Chinese cuisines.

Her life obviously revolves around that combination as she enjoys doing what she does best – entertaining people with her charm and filling up their stomachs with good food.

"The taste of our food is the result of combining Asian cuisines to come up with something new; hence it is called Asian fusion. We create soups and sauces with the freshest of ingredients," shares the Spicy Susan who’s also a familiar face in Singapore television for her show "My Grandson The Doctor." For this, she even earned the Best Actress award from the Asian Television Awards.

She is not the 6th member of the Spice Girls, but with her natural comic punch lines and zest for cooking, she has turned herself into a pure entertainer, as emphasized by her remarkable presence as a participant of a nationwide ABS-CBN TV search for the ‘ultimate cooking diva.’ She ended up winning the first runner-up award. But more than that, what was greatly exposed was her admirable persona and her winning dish, "Prawns with Pineapple" which is one of those things where you will say that ‘sauce is the key.’

Susan – The Cooking Diva’s Kitchen, located at the back row of Hobbies of Asia in Pasay, is a good place for people looking for that distinct Asian taste. This is where Susan displays her innate talent for cooking, and heart for food – a passion that extends from the cooking corner to the dining area wherein she walks and sits around to converse with customers amused of her.

In some ways, she has become a celebrity in her own right, as lots of people normally recognize her as that same energetic, comic figure from that "Makuha Ka Sa Tikim" TV cook-search fame. "Joining the cooking showdown has gained me some following; now people recognize me in malls and supermarkets," she admits.

It wouldn’t be surprising if one day she becomes a regular sight on the boob tube, especially since she has the look and flair of a well-loved comedienne.

Then again, the bottom line is Spicy Susan is a competent cook. And her restaurant, which also has a branch in the vicinity of Star City (also in Pasay), is proof that she pays much value to customers, making sure that her menu list has that touch for the Filipino taste.

"Some people may think that because I’m called ‘Spicy,’ everything in my kitchen is so. What I do really is assure that we have a balanced menu for those craving for the spicy and those who are not. My food is generally spicy and sweet," the young-looking 36-year old reasons out.

Take the taste of Nonya Curry Chicken, or the Spicy Pork, or the Sambal Fish. Coupled them with Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) and you get a hearty meal you don’t normally enjoy in most restaurants.

The Satay, a Singaporean barbecue, is said to be marinated in tumeric powder for 48 hours so as to ‘tenderize’ it and enhance its flavor and aroma. Her top recipe, Prawns and Pineapples, has Kaffir lime leaves as an additional twist for shrimp-addicts.

The Cooking Diva’s Kitchen opens daily to diners – best for lunch and dinner. A glimpse of or a chat with Spicy Susan will make your dining more enjoyable, with her vibrant personality and colorful clothes reassuring you that eating is fun.

While some chart-topping singing divas find their way to their audiences’ hearts by way of the ears, Susan plays the right notes through the tummy.
