436th Anniversary of the City of Manila
THE City of Manila started as a Malay settlement at the mouth of the Pasig River. It was named Maynilad after the nilad plant whose star-shaped flowers clustered in abundance along the low-lying riverbanks. By the middle of the 16th century, the city was a thriving community under the leadership of Rajah Matanda, with a young man named Rajah Sulayman, nephew of Matanda, as coruler. Historical records reveal that Manila was already an established entrepot and a political and military center of the region around the Manila Bay even before the coming of the Spaniards.

Prospects of Korean reunification
THIS week marks the 57th Anniversary of the Korean War in which the Philippines contributed combat troops on the side of the United Nations Command to help defend freedom in that divided nation. It will be recalled that hostilities began at dawn on 25 June 1950 when the communist Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) suddenly attacked across the 38th parallel on a broad front with some 135,000 troops supported by 240 tanks, 180 combat aircraft and massed artillery. The invasion came as a complete surprise to the US and its allies but, upon President Truman’s urgent appeal, the United Nations responded immediately by the unanimous passage of UN Security Council Resolution 82, which called for:

Doña Marcela Marino Agoncillo 147th Birth Anniversary
DOÑA Marcela Marino Agoncillo is known as the maker of the Philippine National Flag. She herself was a sterling example of a model Filipina. She was a personification of Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s ideal Filipina, patriotic, of firm conviction, who inspired respect from men and inspired them to fight for lofty goals. She taught her people to love their fellowmen, love their country and love God Almighty.

ARMM, election operators’ turf
TURF has several meanings in the dictionary, it may mean sod, turf of grass, or track for horse racing. In slang it is a neighborhood area regarded by a street gang as its own territory to be defended against other gangs, or one’s own territory or domain. If one has any doubts at all about the nature of elections in the ARMM, here are some random reports since May until the present. The Comelec itself admits that the voters lists are padded. None other than Comelec Executive Director Pio Joson said that of the 1.5 M voters in the ARMM, half a million voters might be spurious. He bared that warring political factions, pad voters lists as an "alcancia" (piggy bank) to ensure victory.

Does tertiary education need changing?
IN the early 1980s, a survey by the Technical Panel for Agricultural Education (TPAE) showed that only two percent of agriculture graduates were self-employed, working on farms. Worse, fewer than 10 schools/colleges had complied with the minimum requirements for the agriculture curriculum imposed by TPAE.

Unleashing the power of laughter
IN our modern stressful life, scientists, doctors, and other health-conscious people as well as just starting to realize – and to discover the great positive effect of laughter. No wonder there are now more than 5,000 laughter clubs and studios in more than 50 countries. Confirming once again the truth of the old saying that "a laugh a day keeps the doctor away."

‘Seriously flawed’
THE US was annoyed by the decision of the UN Human Rights Council to stop monitoring the human rights situation in Cuba while continuing to do so in Israel.

Endometriosis
A QUICK check of "sheol" (read quotation) shows it is esoteric Hebrew for "grave" or "pit" or sometimes the Judaic example of Hell.
