Herbs featured in September agri mag

By Zac B. Sarian

The many culinary and medicinal herbs are featured in the September issue of Agriculture Magazine which will be off the press this weekend.

These include many in the collection of Adela Ang who has come up with a showcase of the most useful herbs at the EDSA Garden House in Quezon City. These include common as well as little known ones. One of the little known herbs in the country (although it has long been enjoyed in other countries) is the Stevia which has sweet leaves. It is valued as a health tonic that is used as fresh as well as dried in diet foods, drinks, biscuits, sauces and preserves.

Also featured are Goto Kola (Centella asiatica), tarragon, lavender (prized for its soothing fragrance), several mint varieties, malvarosa, Perilla (used in soups and Japanese sushi), and many others.

There is also a feature on a group of women in Mindanao making beautiful handmade paper out of durian shells. An improved water heat treatment for mango is also featured, said to be cheaper than the costly vapor heat treatment.

An expert also writes about "How to solve the declining yield of RP’s major seaweed," the Kappaphycus alvarezii. A retired forester writes about the flowering and fruiting of some reforestation species in Mt. Makiling and Mt. Banahaw. Another writes about forest farming as a profitable solution to global warming.

There are also inspiring stories, including the feature about Dr. Arturo Marcelino of Nueva Ecija who is a successful grower of ulang. Another is the story of a former tricycle driver who now excels in farming, also in Nueva Ecija.

Other stories include a listing of banned and restricted pesticides in the Philippines, vegetative propagation of hybrid ipil-ipil, improving rice yields with new technologies, and others.

Agriculture Magazine, published by the Manila Bulletin, is the most widely circulated magazine in its field.
