One day after one member of the NCAA policy board said that the NCAA basketball season might be scrapped if San Beda College keeps on dragging the league to court, the head of the management committee denied such a plan was ever discussed.
"We never entertained the thought of aborting the season," MANCOM chairman Paul Supan said in a press statement after newspapers quoted an anonymous source as saying the NCAA might cut the season short if San Beda gets an extension on its temporary restraining order to lift the suspension on its star player Yousif Aljamal.
The source said plans of scrapping the season was an informal discussion among some MANCOM members but was never discussed officially while the group was in session.
San Beda and the NCAA are tangled in a legal battle over Aljamal who was banned permanently by the MANCOM for violating league rules over his decision to enter the PBA draft while San Beda was able to secure a TRO last Wednesday that allowed Aljamal to play.
Both sides are now trying to find common ground to ease the tension and resolve the matter. Happily for league and the team, San Beda’s next game is still on Wednesday giving both sides several days to come up with an acceptable solution.
Meanwhile, the games will go on.
"Rest assured, while the court proceedings are taking place, the games will continue," Supan said.
His assurance came after the MANCOM and the policy board met to diffuse the situation yesterday.
One factor in favor of seeing the tournament through is the NCAA’s television contract with ABS-CBN. Scrapping the tournament may invite more legal problems, sources said.
Meanwhile, the MANCOM warned both San Beda and JRU, particularly coaches Frankie Lim of SBC and Ariel Vanguardia of JRU, that more outburst such as the one that attended their last game, would be dealt with severely.
"Since the incident didn’t happen inside the court, there will be no suspension. But we issued stern warning. A repetition will mean ejection and one-game suspension," MANCOM member Henry Atayde said.
