In the Name of the Rose
spacer

It is a wonder how a single bloom could embody beauty, romance, passion and a whole world of emotions. The rose, as simple as it may be, easily creates magic in the heart of every woman. Love has been created simply by presenting the rose, which may be the easiest way of expressing one’s deepest thoughts and unexplainable feelings. Allow yourself to plunge in memories of the various chapters of your love story as you fill your wedding day with these meaningful blooms.

What was once a mere flower in the wild has become a symbol of love and passion, making it the only flower that has claimed a significant spot in history. Remarkable paintings, heart-warming sonnets and moving songs have been inspired by it and women of different ages and status have been compared to it. Though its existence can be traced back to around 35 million years ago, it was not until 3000 BC when its cultivation began. Roman nobilities established vast lands of rose gardens since the rose was widely used for medicinal purposes, as confetti, and as a source of perfume. Its value exponentially increased throughout the centuries that it even came to a point that it was considered as legal tender, used for bartering by royalty.

The rose also ably captures the extreme emotions of a person, so much so that it was used as a symbol of factions trying to seize control of England during the 15th century, with the red rose symbolizing York and the white rose symbolizing Lancaster. Because of this fact, that war became known as "The War of the Roses."

The Language of Roses

Thousands of rose species can be found across the globe, each bearing its own charm and distinction. Its colors also reflect different types of emotions, making it a very effective way of silent communication. Though white roses are usually the ones used in weddings, couples have also become bolder and have combined the different hues of the rose in their floral arrangements. Here, About Weddings let you in on the secret language of the rose.

■ Red Rose - Love, beauty, courage, respect, romantic love, congratulations, sincere love and passion.

■ White Rose - Purity, innocence, happy love, youthfulness, heavenly, humility and reverence.

■ Dark Red Rose - Unconscious beauty

■ Pink - Appreciation, grace, perfect happiness, admiration, gentleness, "Thank you" and "Please believe me."

■ Dark pink - Appreciation, gratitude and "Thank you."

■ Light pink - Gentleness, sympathy, admiration, gladness, grace, sweetness and joy.

■ Yellow - Gladness, friendship, joy, promise of a new beginning, delight, "Welcome back," "Remember me" and "I care."

■ Yellow with red tip - Friendship, falling in love.

■ Orange - Enthusiasm and desire.

■ Peach - Appreciation, sincerity, gratitude, closing the deal and "Let’s get together."

■ Pale Peach - Modesty

■ Coral - Desire

■ Lavender - Love at first sight and enchantment.

■ Blue - Mystery, intrigue, the unattainable and the impossible.

Tell your story or create your personal messages through combining different colors. A playful mix of various colors could exude a vibrant yet classic atmosphere to your wedding. A bunch of red and white roses signifies unity while a combination of red and yellow roses implies jovial and happy feelings. A single rose tries to say "I love you" or "I love you still" while a bunch of it implies gratitude. Place a full-blown rose in between two buds to imply secrecy or gather a bunch of pale-colored roses to convey sociability or friendship. Two roses taped or wired together to form one stem suggests an upcoming engagement.

It has its own secret language and its presence is truly welcoming. The rose has been a symbol of love for ages and its charm has not subsided, not even one bit. Perhaps it is time for you to gather the bundle of memories and relive each of these blissful moments as you surround your wedding day with the magnificence of the rose. Text by LUCCI CORAL
