Not Your Ordinary Bouquet
By John & Benz Rana
Soon-to-weds who follow a specific theme would make sure that several elements of their wedding follow a certain look and feel. The chosen theme would usually be evident in the invitations, the design of the cake, the style of the gowns, the ambiance of the reception hall or even the way the table centerpieces are arranged but very seldom would the theme be obvious in the bouquet.
When we decided to feature real brides who had thematic bouquets, we knew we wouldn’t find them in droves. We imagined we’d be able to feature a minimum of 5 brides for this month’s column but that proved to be no easy task either. Here are 3 brides who dared to reflect their theme in their bouquets. We hope that by presenting these more brides would be inspired to do same.
Theme: Hello Kitty

When Gail & Ivy Henson got married in December of 2005, they decided to have a Hello Kitty theme. They found a lot of Hello Kitty-themed elements on the Internet. Unfortunately, the costs were prohibitive. Not wanting to abandon the idea of a Hello Kitty-themed wedding, they worked their way to having one.
Q. How did you come up with your theme and how were you able to incorporate it in your bouquet?
A. The bouquet was shaped like Hello Kitty’s face. The idea was inspired from a similar bouquet I chanced upon a Sanrio Japan website which costs 3,990 yen!
For our flower girls, we bought little Hello Kitty dolls and had each set up in a basket with flowers. Our flower girls carried the baskets during the wedding march. The same were given to the girls afterwards as a token from our wedding.
Q. How was your florist able to execute the concept?
A. We went to Mr. Boy Mahusay and showed him a printout of the picture we found on the net. He was a little hesitant to take the job since it’s not your usual ball-shaped bouquet. His partner, John Macaraeg, took the challenge after I showed them printed outlines of Kitty’s face which they could use as a guide in forming the shape of the bouquet. Proud and happy of their achievement, they always show my Hello Kitty bouquet in their portfolio to their potential customers.
Q. What flowers were used in your bouquet?
John told me it took him two hours to finish the bouquet. He used half a dozen white carnations to form the head and white anthuriums for the ears. He used buttons for Kitty’s eyes and nose. To emphasize the face, he added colorful flowers like daisies and mums around it.
Theme: Butterfly

The June 2004 wedding of Adrian & Apple Cabel had a butterfly theme, believing that butterflies symbolize a happy marriage and Apple wanted their guests to easily associate her bouquet with the theme the moment she started walking down the aisle.
Q. How did you come up with your theme and how were you able to incorporate it in your bouquet?
A. I thought of the idea and discussed it with my florist. I wanted almost all my wedding details to be themed so I had to have that butterfly bouquet.
Q. How was your florist able to execute the concept?
Luckily, my florist (Angelic Blooms), despite not having done anything like my bouquet before, assured me that she can definitely do it. I guess it also helped that she liked my idea and was inspired to experiment. My bouquet was just patterned after the shape of a butterfly with my motif, yellow gold, being the dominant color.
Q. What flowers were used in your bouquet?
A. My florist used white and yellow roses. She also added pearls and other embellishments to make it look nicer.
Theme: Beach (Boracay in Manila)

When Steph married Pierre Niles in December of last year it could’ve never been more perfect to have a beach theme since she was working for Beach Hut Clear Spray, a locally made non-lotion sun block now making waves in the global market.
Q. How did you come up with your theme and how were you able to incorporate it in your bouquet?
A. I really wanted every detail to be in line with the beach theme as much as possible and I was avoiding the ordinary hand-tied bouquets you typically see in weddings. I was looking for something unique even for the bouquets that I and my entourage will hold. I found inspiration in a bridal magazine where they had a similar theme. We used actual shells to hold the rings as well.
Q. How was your florist able to execute the concept?
A.To incorporate the beach theme, Teddy Manuel used shells to hold my and entourage’s bouquets together. Each bouquet had flowers arranged inside a big shell and I and my female entourage held these arrangements.
Q. What flowers were used in your bouquet?
A. The bouquet was a mixed arrangement of yellow cymbidiums, orange mokara orchids and yellow oncidium orchids in a pearl white shell with orange and yellow capiz shells for added texture.
Special thanks to Jody Liwanag of EventsExperts for the heads-up on the unique bouquet in the Niles wedding.
