The wedding of Rhea de Vera and Jonathan Aguirre on November 11, 2006 at Ville Sommet, Tagaytay was an event we will never forget. The bride has great taste and she wanted everything to be perfect. We carefully planned the styling of the wedding from the ceremony, outdoor cocktails up to the reception party. Unfortunately, a typhoon with winds of up to 95-120 kilometers per hour arrived to wreak havoc on the celebration. We had to transport all flowers and materials amidst strong gusts of wind and pounding rain. By the end of the day, we were all soaked to the bone. The guests had to brave the slippery path and strong winds while trying desperately to hold onto their umbrellas just to get inside the glass house which was the reception venue. Understandably, we had to forgo our plans for romantic, candlelit cocktails in the garden.
All was still well though because guests felt like they were entering an oasis upon entering the glass house. Despite all the trouble they had to brave through, the guests enjoyed the celebration and they loved how the venue was styled with flowers. The bride was overwhelming with her show of appreciation for the styling and flowers. It was good to know that she ended up having fun at their wedding despite the typhoon.

I have had lots of memorable weddings. Among them are the weddings of celebrities Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzales and Ylmaz and Ruffa Gutierrez. Also included in the list are my overseas weddings in Malaysia such as the Paul weddings and that of the Kuoks’, the owners of the Shangri-La chain of properties. I consider the wedding of Aga and Charlene memorable because it was our first high-profile celebrity wedding. I find Ylmaz and Ruffa’s wedding memorable because of its grandness. Lastly, I deem memorable the overseas weddings I mentioned for the opportunity they gave us to prove to the world that Filipinos are one of the best in terms of creative styling.

The most memorable one for me is a destination wedding I did for a couple who opted to celebrate in Tagaytay. They wanted a very intimate ceremony and reception. In keeping with their autumn theme, the decor reflected the season complete with maple leaves. I used a lot of rich ‘fall’ shades of orange, yellow, burgundy, red and terracotta. This turned out to be memorable for me because the weather was really bad days prior to the wedding. The couple and I were all very jittery. We ended setting up amidst howling winds on their wedding eve. The following morning broke to drizzles and a light shower. On the afternoon of the wedding, the sun shone through. It was a miracle. The ceremony was a breeze -- literally. The guests were all enjoying and the couple’s anxiety has then turned to smiles and laughter. The couple and I ended up being good friends, and this is what I consider a perk of my job - gaining life-long friends.

My favorite, favorite wedding of all time is Mai Castro’s wedding to David Kaufman! I was presented with the challenge of styling the already gorgeous greenhouse of Sonya’s Garden hence, the floral design and layout had to be in synch with the look of the venue as well as with the bride’s and her entourage’s. The couple chose petal pastels and truffle creams as their central theme. To underline the theme I used strings of rose petals and cattleya blossoms hung like floral curtains. The elongated greenhouse dictated that we use an uncommon layout of three, very long tables that could seat 70 people each, placed parallel to each other. I used chocolate brown table covers topped with burgundy organza runners. Fuschia pink lanterns, arranged in rows, gave new character to the venue. They gave a sense of continuity to the linear pattern of the tables. On the tables, I used pink roses in antiquated English urns. The rows of tables lead all eyes to the bridal stage. There, I placed a day bed with cream and coffee pillows with a backdrop of flowering perrenials and accented with a giant, fuschia pink lantern. I scattered accents of colored pitchers filled with roses and fuschia carnations throughout the reception area.

The most memorable wedding I styled is, surprisingly, the one for whom I never had the chance to meet. It was the wedding of a client from abroad. According to them, they were searching the Internet for an event stylist and Voila! They found me. The couple wanted a grand wedding and, since they’ve already seen my Lavender-themed reception set-up in the fifth edition of Wedding Essentials magazine, they wanted it to be as grand as possible. We performed transactions through the Internet. I presented them with my design proposals, they loved it, and so we closed the deal. It was memorable because the couple and their guests loved the styling even though we’ve never seen each other in the flesh.
