"Books Across the Sea’’, book publishing conference in Southeast Asia that aims to deepen awareness of books written and published by, and in, one another’s country, will be mounted by the the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP) on Aug. 28–29, at the Bayview Park Hotel.
Plenary sessions on Aug. 28 are "Books in the Connected Global World", to be delivered by Eric Oei, president, Periplus; and "Books and Schools: Partners in Education" to be delivered by Emerlinda Roman, president, University of the Philippines.
On Aug. 29, topics for the plenary sessions are "Books and Libraries: A Symbiotic Relationship", to be delivered by Heather Mansell, manager, Innovative Projects, State Library of New South Wales; and "Books and Rights: Trade and Protection", to be delivered by Adrian Cristobal, Jr., director, Intellectual Property Office. Questions will be entertained after each session.
The conference will also include concurrent sessions at the Manila International Book Fair. On Aug. 28, discussions will be held on the topics "Making Books Across Cultures", "Making Better and Competitive Books", "How Books Must Travel", "Books and their Users", "Making Textbooks and Children’s Books Across Cultures", "Making Better and Competitive Textbooks and Children’s Books", and "Books and Children"
On Aug. 29, topics for discussion will be "Balancing Trade and Protection", "Rights Trade Toward Creativity", "The Best at the Least Cost", and "Who is Afraid of the Internet?" For details, e-mail pubdept@anvil.com.ph
