Bureau of Immigration’s 67th Foundation Day

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) began as a division of the Bureau of Customs in 1899, in the early years of the American regime in the Philippines, pursuant to Act No. 702 of the Philippine Commission. The functions of immigration remained under the bureau until 1937, when it was transferred to the Bureau of Labor.

Weighing In
By PAT STO. TOMAS

IT is Monday, August 27 and it is raining tik-a-tik where I live. Tik-a-tik is Tagalog for lazy rain which means not typhoon proportion but enough to keep you indoors. As Pagasa says, this is just an LPA (low pressure area) and no storm has yet entered PAR (Philippine area of responsibility). But I am writing this column one week ahead to (over) compensate for a nearly-missed deadline last week and a sick leave that, depending on the efficacy of antibiotics, hopefully ends tomorrow.

Business Beat
Melito Salazar Jr.

WHEN I received the ABC Foundation News sent by fellow Rotarian Lew Edwards, who is its founder and chairman, I was impressed by the good they have done as well as the support given by corporations and individuals, many of whom are not exactly rich. The ABC Foundation provides night high school scholarships for the needy in Siena College, San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, Quezon City and Taytay, Rizal. The foundation also has its Eyeglass Project which has provided nearly four thousand glasses to students of the ERDA Technical and Vocational High School and the Lupang Pangako Elementary School in Payatas B, Quezon City over the last two years. It also conducts medical and dental missions for the scholars, parents and others who need the services.

Second Thoughts
By EDILBERTO C. DE JESUS

PHNOM Penh – Indelibly engraved in memory, the facts and figures flow smoothly, without hesitation or pause, from the Cambodian informant: Between early February and mid-August 1973, six months of American bombing of Cambodia, which helped turn the population against the US-supported government of Gen. Lon Nol; 20 months of insurgency; three years, eighth months, 20 days of the Khmer Rouge regime.

The rejection at Nazareth

JESUS came to Nazareth, where He had grown up, and went according to His custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

Patriotic value
By JESUS P. ESTANISLAO

A RECURRING theme that nonetheless needs to be emphasized is the high value of any work, provided it is done well and with a selfless motive.

It’s time we adopt so-called ‘green’ offices

WE can copy them here because they are not difficult to imitate. What I mean are places of work — in government and private — that are the in-concept of corporate America today: ‘Green’ offices.

Erap’s fate

Some praise at Morning what they blame at Night; But always thank the last Opinion right. – Alexander Pope
