Take photographic excellence to the next level with Canon EOS 40D DSLR featuring 10.1-megapixels, DIGIC III image processing, CMOS sensor

Manila, August 26, 2007 -- Imagine the power of a 10.1-megapixel professional-grade camera that is capable of capturing a blazing 6.5 frames per second (fps). Along with the processing power of the DIGIC III imaging processor and focusing speed of a high precision 9-point cross autofocus system, Canon’s new EOS 40D DSLR camera raises the bar once again.

Targeted at an increasingly discerning population of serious creative photographers and professionals in the Philippines, the EOS 40D continues the legacy of a camera that already claimed a significant share of the Asia Pacific DSLR market. The new EOS40D will be made available in the local market starting September 2007.

As the new and improved successor of the Canon’s mid-range of DSLR cameras, the EOS 40D is engineered

to meet the needs of the prosumer and professional markets. Following the success footsteps of the highly popular EOS 30D, the EOS 40D is packed with Canon’s most advanced photographic technologies, including an integrated sensor cleaning function, and 14-bit analog-digital (A/D) conversion, to deliver top-notch images and performance.

Top-of-class Performance

Three new technologies work in conjunction to deliver Canon EOS 40D 's high-speed, high-resolution results: Canon's powerful DIGIC III imaging processor technology, extended 14-bit A/D signal conversion processing capability, and a new 10.1-megapixel (approximately 3888 x 2592 pixels) CMOS sensor.

The Canon EOS 40D is the first mid-range EOS DSLR to feature the new generation DIGIC III processor. Retaining the DIGIC II’s quality image detailing and natural colour reproduction, DIGIC III technology provides the sheer processing power necessary to deliver Canon EOS 40D’s high speed, high ISO and continuous shooting capabilities.

In addition, the improved A/D signal conversion rate allows life-like colour reproduction as well as a wider dynamic range. This translates into images that are rich and vibrant. With the capability of 10.1 megapixels, any photo taken by the Canon EOS 40D can be easily cropped for creative effects and printed up to A3 size.

The expanded memory buffer and improved shooting speed of the EOS 40D is capable of firing 6.5fps in high-speed mode (up to a maximum of 75 shots), compared to 5fps of EOS 30D. This high level of performance can be achieved in either Single Shot AF or AI Servo AF mode.

Enhanced Versatility for Great Photo Opportunity

Whether it’s a hot sunny day at high noon or a dimly lit indoor performance, EOS 40D is able to handle all situations. It retains the ISO speeds of the EOS 30D, with a range from ISO100 to ISO1, 600 (including an extended optional setting of ISO 3,200). The improved auto setting for ISO speed selection allows the photographer to concentrate on subject matter by automatically matching ISO speed (up to ISO 800 as compared to the EOS 30D’s ISO 400 limit) to the ideal exposure settings.

The EOS 40D’s Live View shooting allows users to shoot images using the LCD monitor instead of having to peer through the optical viewfinder. Photographers using Live View can see the entire frame as opposed to the optical viewfinder, which only displays 95 percent of the view. There’s also a 5x and 10x zooming functions to provide for ultra-precise focusing. In addition, the ‘silent shooting’ mode, minimises shutter noise which stage photographers, private detectives and journalist would appreciate.

While the EOS 40D maintains the RAW file formats of its predecessor, a new sRAW format has been added for photographers to select a smaller file size format (approximately 2.5-megapixel in size) for reproduction of lower resolution files, resulting to fast and easy downloads.

Trusted Reliability & Quality

Following the winning formula of the EOS 30D, the EOS 40D is contoured for comfortable and easy handling. Built with highly durable rigid magnesium alloy – yet weighing only 740g – EOS 40D is ergonomically designed for the perfect grip and operation, while the large 3.0-inch TFT LCD monitor allows for faster menu selection and image review with an improved wide-viewing angle.

Autofocus performance has also been improved with a new high precision, 9 cross-type sensors with sensitivity up to f/ 5.6, spread out across the AF area to better accommodate off-center subjects. EOS 40D is the first EOS camera to offer support for central f/2.8 vertical and horizontal range – when used with lenses with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or brighter, more precise AF results can be achieved.

Maintenance of the EOS 40D comes effortless with the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, which ingeniously incorporates three techniques that work in tandem to eliminate dust particles. The self-cleaning sensor unit literally vibrates off any dust particles that may have collected on the sensor when the EOS 40D is turned on/off. Post-processing dust removal software (using Canon’s Digital Photo Professional application) aids in removing dust spots in the digital photographs, while dust and water-proofing features have also been improved, with sealing material lining the CF card slot and battery compartment cover (two of the most common entry areas for dirt and dust into the camera body).

New Kit Lens Bundle

EOS 40D is offered as an optional package with the new EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS kit lens. Designed for Canon DSLR cameras that use the EF-S lens mount, the EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS lens was developed in response to an increasing demand for an affordable lens with Image Stabilizer (IS) technology. Even with the Image Stabilizer function built-in, the new lens retains almost the same size and weight as the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens, while compensating for up to four f-stops of shutter speed.

The EF-S 18-55mm IS lens maintains high image quality throughout the entire zoom range with precision aspherical UD lens elements that corrects aberrations and lens coating that minimizes ghosting effects and flare. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.25 m at all zoom focal lengths, the EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS lens’s circular aperture helps to achieve soft-toned images, while its optimized Auto-focus control provides for precision focusing.
