EDU LOPEZ

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) intends to realign college education with the needs of the economy to ensure the employability of graduates.

New CHEd chairman Romulo Neri said such measure hopes to reduce the number of unemployed persons in the country.

"We have to talk to business, get business together with the academic community to make sure courses are aligned what the business needs and what the academic community produces in terms of graduates," he said.

Neri wants to create a better teaching curriculum for colleges and universities to ensure these produce quality graduates.

"We also need to fasttrack the implementation of ladderized (curriculum) system," he noted.

A radical alternative method of education, the ladderized education system is a form of learning that combines technical and vocational courses that are creditable for a collegiate degree.

In line with these efforts, the National Competitiveness Council has been pursuing various onthe-job training or dualtechnology approach through the Department of Labor and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), in coordination with CHED and concerned private sector/industry associations.

The Department of Education (DepEd) likewise is strengthening its Technical and Vocational Education curriculum in public schools to equip the students with skills and competencies they need for future employment.

This will also empower industries by filling up over 65,000 vacancies in enterprises looking for highly-trained workers.

The NCC also intends to revise the existing curriculum for the Cyber-services, Medical Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Management and Semiconductor/Electronics.
