UP College of Music, Ateneo Press launch book on music educ’n
The UP College of Music and the Ateneo de Manila University Press will launch Raul Navarro’s pioneering work, "Kolonyal na Patakaran at ang Nagbabagong Kamalayang Filipino: Musika sa Publikong Paaralan sa Pilipinas, 1898 to 1935," on Monday, Sept. 10, 5 to 7 p.m., at the mini-hall, College of Music, UP Diliman, Quezon City.
To perform some pieces that the book discusses are sopranos Gabrielle Francisco and Maribel Miguel, the Mary the Queen Children’s Choir, the Sta. Isabel Vocal Ensemble, and the UP Vocal Ensemble.
Dr. Navarro, associate professor at the College of Music, studied the overt and covert policies of the colonial period in the field of music education and their implications on the popular consciousness. Through critical analysis of music pieces, official documents, and music books, Dr. Navarro shows the intertwined relationship among music, culture, and politics, amidst the backdrop of colonialism and resistance.
