Victory ride continues for Muziklaban winner
spacer

Yugel Losorata

The reigning champion of the annual Muziklaban Rock Challenge found itself in cloud nine upon being declared winner of last year’s much-followed band competition.

Reasonably the gravity of such feeling continues to pull up the spirit of this triumphant rock act called Hardboiledeggz, especially with its six-song, debut album already out in the market.

After wowing the judges and audiences to claim the grand prize in the popular rock tiff presented by Red Horse Beer, the group went to the next phase of its ride to success which is what most struggling bands out there would dream about: ‘recording a real album.’

Under the care of well-established Viva Records, the four-man band launched its debut CD "Lunar" barely a couple of months back. The content of which includes "Grace", one of the songs they performed during the 2006 Muziklaban finals and is now gaining airplay over FM radio.

"Kuwento ng buhay ng bahista naming si Emil ang "Grace". It’s a love story and I think a lot of people could relate to it, being a relationship-based song," shared one of the boys in an interview with the Manila Bulletin.

Hardboiledeggz is comprised of Rohan Rimando (vocals and guitar), Rodel Hufana (guitar), Emil Villanueva (bass) and Sep Navalta (drums).

The memory of that unforgettable moment of winning is still fresh in the minds of these guys who came from Baguio and practically hitched a ride to Manila for fortune. They recalled in chorus, "We were dumbfounded. Nakakagulat at ‘di kami makapaniwala."

Described as a progressive emometal band, Hardboiledeggz claims the group has experienced its share of struggles, which made their Muziklaban win and the album break a lot more rewarding. The members would rather insist they’re not just some amateur bands which took home the bacon through a lucky card.

"We’re even paying just to play & be heard," they said, "Tutugtog kami sa labas ng Baguio, tapos walang tao, wala kahit beer. We all know that things have just begun for us and we’re in it for the ride. It wouldn’t be as much fun though without those struggles."

Apart from "Grace," the other "Lunar" songs are "Kronos Smiles," "Equinox," "Waiting," the album title track, and "Dreams in Stereo," a number the group had previously recorded for the Baguio Music Scene Compilation back in Christmas of 2005.

When asked why they named themselves Hardboiledeggz, the reply was figuratively smart: "We’d like to express that our music is tough on the outside pero may soft side sa kalooban. We liked how it sounded din kasi hindi siya pretentious."

According to them, guitar player Rodel and bassist Emil grew up together, while the line-up was completed in 2003 when they decided to record their originals. One thing that hasn’t changed even with big breaks coming their way is their notion of being a band. "‘Yung aim namin is not to be famous but to make a decent living out of music and make good with it for as long as we can."

More than for themselves, Hardboiledeggz also hopes music will be more accessible to other parts of the country, from North to South. And that doors will be more open for acts outside Metro Manila.
