The performers are singers for a cause.
Their show is a concert for a church. And the concert project is called Halad.
The country’s top tenor, his soprano sister, an executive of the biggest construction firm here and an actor-comedian-singer are joining hands to put up a concert for a noble cause, the rehabilitation of a church and convent in Molo, Iloilo City.
Halad-- which will feature tenor Nolyn A. Cabahug, his younger sister Lisa Cabahug, Eric A. Cruz, the executive vice president of the construction firm F.F. Cruz & Co., Inc., and actor-comedian Dyords Javier—will be held at the St. Anne Parish Church in Molo, Iloilo City on October 12. The backup orchestra will be provided by the Music Unlimited Ensemble under Ms Sabrina Villaflor.
The concert is under the auspices of the Iloilo Integrated Lions Club and the St. Anne Parish Council.
Proceeds from the concert will finance the rehabilitation of the St. Anne parish convent and the acquisition of medical supplies, furnitures and apparatus of the mobile clinic of the Iloilo Integrated Lions Club in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
Parts of the proceeds will also be used for the operation of seven-month-old Clark James Belgira who is suffering from congenital hydrocephalus under the Bantay Bata 163 program.
The concert sponsors said that the event will cater to all classes in society with the Cabahug brother and sister act and Eric Cruz rendering classical and popular numbers for the class A and B set. Comedian Dyords Javier, a pop music enthusiast, will provide the comical side of music preferred by the Class C crowd.
The 166-year-old Molo Church—the only one to exude Gothic-Renaissance architecture outside of Manila—is one of the most familiar landmarks of Iloilo. The National Historical Institute declared it a national landmark in 1992.
The church has five Gothic wooden altars and women saints occupy their separate niches in the interior pillars.
It is popularly called as the women’s church because of the 16 images of women saints inside with the statue of Saint Anne (or Santa Ana), the mother of the Virgin Mary, occupying the centerpiece retablo.
It is in this venue that the concert singers will be performing. Concert sponsors said they could not find a better setting for these great artists.
Nolyn A. Cabahug is described by Don Jaime Zobel de Ayala, a noted patron of the arts, as a world-class tenor. He once wrote: "Nolyn is a Filipino victor. He has conquered the hearts of our countrymen with his beautiful voice."
Don Jaime even added: "Why listen to foreign conquerors when we have in our midst a world-class homegrown singer?"
The late art critic Leonor Orosa Goquinco also acknowledged: "The sensational Cabahug confirms his place in the front rank of our tenors by his exquisite interpretations."
As for Nolyn’s soprano sister, Lisa, the same critic, Goquinco, described her as "a commanding singer who produces effective and flexible phrases and distinguishes herself through velvety smooth, mellifluous and effortless renditions."
Eric Cruz, the vice president (construction and housing) of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), is a renowned music lover who is a tenor in his own right. He counts the late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti and countryman Nolyn as his favorite tenors.
Dyords Javier is a member of the Ang4gettables, a quarter also made up of Isay Alvarez, Bimbo Zerrudo and Pinky Marquez. He has released an album of songs, Puede, which includes the hit single Ukay Ukay.
