Walden Sadiri

Nearing its second year anniversary this November, QTV-11’s "May Trabaho Ka" hosted by Paolo Abrera and Mariz Umali, has delivered some 32 jobs to 53 deserving employees.

And in the coming months, the number is expected to grow!

One of the pioneering shows in QTV-11, the show’s success can be attributed to the interest and entertainment they draw from the various job vacancies they are trying to fill up through their show. "May Trabaho Ka" which airs every Sundy at 8 p.m. is a one-hour reality show wherein an employer or company looks for his "perfect" employee. In line with the job at stake, accepted applicants will undergo challenges or tasks. And the winner of all the challenges will get the job.

Hosts Mariz Umali and Paolo Abrera

Explained one of the hosts, Paolo Abrera: "The nice thing about it is that we’re able to combine what is essentially a public service in the form of an entertaining reality program. The plus side is that we get a glimpse on the lives of the applicants because it’s a reality program and it’s not scripted in any way. We see how important it is for many applicants to actually get the job. And when some of them get eliminated, talagang iyakan beause it’s really a serious pursuit for them!"

Some of the companies and/or people they have partnered with for their series were Cravings Bakeshop and Restaurant, Frederick Peralta, Enchanted Kingdom, Klownz and Zirkoh Bar, Gerry’s Grill, TRG Philippines, Club Paraw, Maxine Clothing Line for Plus Size Women, City Lifestyle Spa and Fitness Center, Coffee Beanery and Robinsons Department Store to mention a few. And so far they have a successful track record in being the conduit for their contestants to have good jobs.

Mariz Umali, who is also one of the hosts, expressed that their interaction doesn’t stop after the winner was announced. They would do follow-up calls and check on how the winners were doing with their new jobs.

"It’s very fulfilling on our part because some of them even get promoted from the jobs they’ve won. Parang bonus pa sa kanila na umaasenso sila," said Mariz who was referring to the cook who won the Gerry’s Grill job and was promoted to Marketing Manager in a year’s time.

Despite the follow-up calls during the said contests, Paolo Abrera stressed that he is (emotionally) detached from their applicants. As much as possible, he doesn’t make himself available to be friends with their participants.

"I don’t go out of my way to be overly familiar. Often times I’m tasked to deliver the bad news. So I try to be very detached and objective. After, it’s nice to offer your congratulations after their difficulties with the tasks and challenges they have to undergo," he opined. "Often times people mistake na kami yung nag-decide. In fact, we have no hand on who wins or not and who makes the final decision."

Mariz is the opposite of Paolo as his co-host admitted. She’s the type who reaches out to the contestants and casually chats with them. In the process, she befriends some of the contestants.

"I wasn’t really tasked to do that pero siguro nasa personality ko na normally nakikipagkwentuhan ako sa kanila…some of them actually cry and they would ask me why they were eliminated…actually it’s kind of hard to see them cry and be eliminated after seeing them work hard and be my friends too. But it’s also our tasks to explain the criteria for the competition. As much as we wanted them to be part of it wala kaming magagawa."

Aside from job promotions, Glenn B. Ala, Program Manager of QTV News and Public Affairs cited that what is exciting is the show’s unpredictability when it comes to the company or employer searching for their employee. There were times that instead of one winner, all the finalists were declared winners and hired.

"Parang nakikita nila how these applicants perform at ano ang capabilities nila. After a while they realize na sayang kung pakakawalan nila. For the sake of the competition isa lang mananalo but there were instances when they were all hired. With Xion Studios, they were looking for their actor but after the competition they cast everyone," explained Mr. Ala.

The diverseness of the applicants is what makes "May Trabaho Ka" also visually entertaining to watch. Not everyone applying too are jobless. Some already have existing jobs but are not happy.

"It’s really fulfilling to see these people applying pa lang especially that these are their dream jobs they are applying for. And pag nakukuha nila yung dream job nila, we’re very happy too…hindi lahat ng applicants walang trabaho. Yung iba meron but they are not just happy. So when they see the opportunity they apply tapos yun pa ang dream job makikita mo ang saya sa kanila," related Mariz.

So did the hosts undergo different challenges before being told "May Trabaho Ka?"

Mr. Ala explained that two were hired because of their credibility which is an important quality in News and Public Affairs.

"Sabi nga ni Paolo kanina, we can’t be too attached to the applicants nor to the judges. In fact we stay away from judging. We’re the facilitators. So particularly silang dalawa were chosen because of their credibility and their ability to facilitate these tasks without being questioned about their credibility…may selection process din naman yan with other hosts considered. But in the end sila ang may trabaho, sila ang deserving!"

After almost two years, what do the hosts think are the basic yet important qualities of applicants?

"Basically it’s not only the skills, it’s the attitude as well. Because there are applicants who are good. A case in point is in our ‘Game Girls’ series. Merong mga girls who are really talented but merong attitude problems. So isa yun sa mga basehan if you’re hiring for your own companies," remarked Mariz.

Paolo agreed, "It’s refreshing to see people to go after their dreams and who are willing to take a risk to follow their dreams. It’s a nice quality to see in the applicants…they should have skills, passion and resilience. Often times we have applicants who have joined previous searches and who didn’t make the cut and come back for another job and this time nakukuha nila yung job…it’s the ability to also bounce back and keep on trying!"

Lastly, Paolo believes that "May Trabaho Ka’s" success is in the great mix of elements in their show.

"The great thing is that our staff are able to create a product that is entertaining as well as primarily of public service. So parang two birds with one stone talaga. It really has some meat on it. Meron siyang redeeming social value unlike other reality TV shows na may tendency maging shallow. Another interesting aspects are the segments wherein we provide tips on improve resume, or how to make better impressions called ‘Trabaho Tips,’ and announcement of available jobs in ‘Job Alerts.’"

With regards to their latest series, "May Trabaho Ka" they’re partnering with Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Asian Media Development Group (AsianMedia), the Southeast Asian publisher of the popular massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) Lineage 2 . who are looking for five young, beautiful and talented ladies to make up the group Game Girls. Their job would be to promote their latest On-line game called "Lineage II." As a bonus, Game Girls would have a recording contract and would be pushed as an all female group similar to the internationally renowned Pussycat Dolls!

The search is sponsored by Manila Bulletin (official media partner), Elite Watches at No Curfew, Tony Galvez Salon, Smileworks Dental Clinic, Risque Darewear, and Uno magazine.

Guests judge Pecjo and fashion expert Helen Ortiz, along with top fashion stylist Patrick Ty, the fashion editor of Mega magazine, create a distinct popstar look that would showce the Game Girls finalists’ beauty, confidence, and star quality.

"It was an exciting challenge since I love doing fashion pictorials," says finalist Sarah Josef. "However, we were all just given 10 minutes to show our best look. It was so nerve-wrecking!" With her sultry Hollywood-styled photograph, the blonde-haired Josef is eventually adjudged by Elite Watch, the official timepiece of the competition, as the winner of the Elite X-Factor Special Award.

The 12 who made it to the next round of The Search for Lineage II Game Girls are: Krish Enriquez, Nicole Saint, Sarah Josef Jastine Romanes, Mycie Villanueva, M Paulino, Jayzel Domingo, Lorraine Sy, Ariane Fowler, Jackie Manglona, Jobie Reprado and Doren Nobles.

So who will make up the Game Girls?

Watch and discover it every Sunday in "May Trabaho Ka" on QTV-11.
