Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary today
spacer

By CHRISTINA I. HERMOSO

The Catholic Church celebrates today the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary with masses, novenas, Marian processions, and the recitation of the Holy Rosary in honor of the Blessed Mother.

Also known in the country as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary La Naval de Manila, Our Lady of Manaoag in Pangasinan, Our Lady of Piat in Tuguegarao, Cagayan, and Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo City, commemorative rites will be held in all Our Lady of the Holy Rosary shrines.

At the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Sto. Domingo Church on Quezon Ave. in Quezon City, the third day of novena masses will be held at 4 p.m. This coincides with the celebration of the centennial of the Canonical Coronation of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary La Naval de Manila.

The "serenata" will be led by the Hangad Jesuit Music Ministry. The La Naval de Manila coffee table book, "The Saga of La Naval: Triumph of a People’s Faith" will also be launched.

In Manaoag, Pangasinan, hourly masses in honor of the Queen of the Holy Rosary (Virgin of Manaoag) will be held from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. The 6 a.m. mass, which will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Anton Eudela, OP, will be televised live on ABS- CBN Channel 2.

A long, traditional La Naval procession featuring the Rosary saints and Our Lady’s image will be held in the afternoon of Oct. 14, starting at Sto. Domingo Church. Novena masses were held from Sept. 28 to Oct. 6.

The feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was established by Pope Pius V in 1571 in commemoration of the naval Battle of Lepanto. The victory of the Christian fleet over the Turks was attributed to the Blessed Mother whose help was invoked by praying the rosary. A procession was offered that day at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy, by the rosary confraternity.

Also called Our Lady of Victory, the feast was extended to the Universal Church by Pope Clement XI in 1716 with the liturgical rank of universal memorial.

According to tradition, the Holy Rosary was revealed to St. Dominic of Spain in 1208 by the Blessed Mother as a loving meditation on the principal events on the life of Jesus and the Holy Mother.

The late Pope John Paul II, a devotee of the Blessed Mother, said, "The Holy Rosary is a way of contemplating the face of Christ, seeing Him with the eyes of Mary." He urged the faithful to "pray the Holy Rosary for peace. Pray this Marian prayer possibly every day so the world can be preserved from the wicked scourge of terrorism."
