Lim slams ‘attack’ on Cory, urges gov’t to lodge protest

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim slammed yesterday the attack on former President Corazon C. Aquino in a foreign television show and urged Filipinos to air their objections on the incident.

Lim asked the government, particularly Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo, to immediately rectify the matter and lodge a protest over the incident.

An NBC show called the former President a "slut," which means a woman of loose morals.

Lim, a close associate of the Aquino family, said the fact that the show concerned is satirical in nature is no excuse in insulting the former President of the Philippines.

Former President Aquino, Lim stressed, is a well-loved public figure who is known for being ultra-conservative and continues to command the highest respect and esteem from all Filipinos and people from various parts of the world.

"She is an icon of democracy, the first woman president of the Philippines, once cited by the Time Magazine as "Woman of the Year" and also the first lady president to address the US Congress," Lim said.

Lim said that if a highly respected woman like President Aquino, who is widely known for being refined and religious, could be treated this way, "How else can we expect our Filipino women to get the respect they deserve once they are abroad?"

"If we allow this kind of attack on the integrity of a woman who once held the highest position in the land, what would stop the world from debasing our women of lesser stature?" the former senator added.

Even if done in jest, Lim said the aspersion cast on former President Aquino should not be taken lightly as it was done in poor taste and complete disregard of the Filipinos’ sensitivies.

The television show aired on cable TV showed a file photo of President Aquino with the word slut, making fun in a similar manner of other known women leaders like former British Prime Minister Margaret Tatcher.

The topic of discussion in the show’s portion was whether or not the US is ready for a woman president, apparently in view of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid.

"The show tried but miserably failed to be funny," Lim said.
