"Love’s Labor’s Lost," one of Shakespeare’s earlier works, was his his prototype for more arresting comedies.
What primarily attracted director Bart Guingona to this comedy is its innocence and playfulness.
Guingona, who played the male lead few years ago, thought that the play would be appreciated by the modern audience if they saw themselves in it.
Guingona believes that it is the hallmark of being a classic — "the ability to survive any contemporary rendition through time."
The play is set in the 1980’s in Manila’s University Belt right before EDSA Revolution, the days of Bagets, Spandau Ballet, when women wears big hair raccoon eyes and bad fashion sense.
The characters live in a confined world that seemed to be impervious to what’s going on in the the outside world.
They believe that courtship and flirtation were the end-all of existence, but they are forced to grow up when events beyond their control forced them to.
The play stars Niccolo Manahan, Epy Quizon, Hans Eckstein, Gabs Santos, Micah Muñoz, Jenny Jamora, Crisel Consunji, Caisa Borromeo, and Cris Villonco.
"Love’s Labor’s Lost" is on its last weekend run on Oct. 5 to 7, with 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows, at Onstage in Greenbelt 1, Makati.
