Roach to watch Barrera handwrapping
spacer

LAS VEGAS — Handwrapping remains a big issue up to this day.

Trainer Freddie Roach said on the eve of Manny Pacquiao’s rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera set Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) that he will personally watch Barrera’s handlers wrap the hands of the Mexican legend.

Roach said he had raised the issue with Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer about Barrera’s peculiar but dangerous wrapping style and was assured it will not allow Barrera to put too much gauze.

"The commission right now is stricter," said Roach.

Both fighters are using the Mexican-made Reyes gloves, reputedly the puncher’s gloves.

Roach said Barrera’s people have succeeded many times in the past of putting too much plaster and gauze on the knuckle area, and, once it gets soaked with water and sweat, it hardens like cement.

In case the two boxers decide to wrap simultaneously, Roach will send assistant Eric Brown to go over Barrera’s dressing room and witness the actual wrapping.

"I have briefed Eric about Barrera’s handwrapping and he knows what to watch out for," said Roach, who will be assisted in the cornerwork by Brown, Filipinos Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri and cutman Joe Chavez.

Notably absent is Justine Fortune, the Australian conditioning coach who was in the first Barrera fight in 2003. Fortune went separate ways with Roach after Pacquiao won over Jorge Solis last April.
