Archers shoot for title
spacer

By WAYLON GALVEZ

IT TOOK University of the East 14 games to sweep the elims and clinch the first finals berth in the UAAP.

Today, La Salle tries its own version of a sweep – only this time it is for the championship: The ultimate dream of every school in the prestigious organization.

With momentum on their side following their dramatic win in the series opener, 64-63, the Green Archers hope to finish off the Red Warriors in Game Two of the 70th UAAP best-of-three Finals at the Araneta Coliseum.

The match is set at 3 p.m. right after the league honors its top individual performers for the year starting at 2 p.m.

University of Santo Tomas center Jervy Cruz will formally accept the coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy to become the first Tiger to win the plum since Chris Cantonjos did the trick in 1995.

Aside from the MVP award, Cruz also leads the Mythical Five selection along with La Salle forward Rico Maierhofer and guard JV Casio, forward Mark Borboran of UE and Ateneo guard Chris Tiu.

Focus though will be on the game as La Salle guns for its seventh championship.

The Warriors are proud owners of 18 titles – second best in the league – but the last time they won a title was 22 years when Allan Caidic and Jerry Codinera powered the Recto-based team to back-to-back championships in 1984-85.

Despite’s UE’s nightmarish 31 errors in Game 1, La Salle coach Franz Pumaren said they are determined to finish the series today.

"I’m confident, the players are confident that we can do it, that we can beat UE again. It’s going to be tough, but we’ll do our best to finish it," said Pumaren, who steered the Taft-based team to five championships, including four straight from 1998 to 2001.

Their 2003 title, however, was stripped by league officials following the eligibility scandal that led to their suspension last year.

In those four championships, only once did La Salle win the title via a sweep. They made the feat against Far Eastern University in 2000.

Still, Franz is not discounting the possibility of UE comeback.

Dindo Pumaren, Franz’s younger brother and UE coach, remains unruffled despite their defeat last Thursday.

"As I’ve said, I’m still confident na kaya pa namin ito," said Pumaren. "But we have to play UE basketball, that’s what I told my players."

That brand of UE basketball is the run-and-gun attack of guards Marcy Arellano and James Martinez, the solid defense of Borboran, Kelvin Gregorio, Mark Fampulme, Elmer Espiritu, Barry Llagas and Hans Thiele, and the outside shooting of Paul Lee and Jorel Canizares.
