Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary

ORIGINALLY known as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, the Feast of the Holy Rosary was established by Saint Pius V on the anniversary of the naval victory won by the Christian fleet at Lepanto, October 7, 1571. The victory was attributed to the help of the holy Mother of God whose aid was invoked through praying the Rosary.

Summit agenda: Korean peace treaty
By Fidel V. Ramos

THE building of an enduring peace regime on the Korean Peninsula is in our national interest. The heroic contribution of the Philippines of 5 battalion combat teams to help defend freedom and democracy in the Republic of Korea (ROK) at the height of the shooting war in that country from June, 1950 to July, 1953 is well-appreciated by the South Korean people and officialdom; likewise, earned the admiration of the Free World Allies who participated in that defense.

Going competitive
By Edgardo J. Angara

THE Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF) was created in 1996 to give farmers and fisherfolk, associations, cooperatives, and agribusiness entrepreneurs a chance to compete in an extremely competitive and increasingly globalized agriculture market.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

WE join the world in observing World Hospice and Palliative Care Day today. The term hospice was first applied to specialized care for dying patients in 1967. Rooted in the centuries-old idea of offering a place of shelter and rest or hospitality to weary and sick travelers on a long journey, it has expanded in today’s world to provide humane and compassionate care for people in the last phase of an incurable disease to allow them to live as fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice care seeks to enable patients to continue to lead an alert, pain-free life, and to manage other symptoms so that their last days may be spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by their loved ones.

108th Death Anniversary of Deodato Arellano, first KKK Supremo

THE first Supremo of the Katipunan, Deodato Arellano, was born in Bulacan, Bulacan, on July 26, 1844. He was a close friend of Marcelo H. del Pilar and his marriage to the latter’s sister Hilaria cemented their relations. He was one of the first recruits of Del Pilar in the latter’s campaign for reforms in the Philippines. And when Del Pilar decided to pursue a more radical means to realize his libertarian aims, Deodato was his able supporter.

Saved by the Rosary
By Fr. Bel R. San Luis, SVD

ONCE a widow confided to a priest that she not only meditated on the Rosary but effectively applied it in her life.

First things first
By Rene Espina

AFTER the last three weeks of confrontation between the administration and the opposition politicians in the Senate, I am not at all surprised that things have somehow settled down. And why not, after the revelations made during the hearings by the star resource persons, what more can be revealed that the public does not already know, or think they know, that conclusions about certain facts have already been made. As I said before, regarding the National Telecommunications Plan, it is important to determine what we need, when, where, and how to acquire and implement it, etc., at the cheapest cost with the maximum benefit. What are the proposed projects that are pending implementation? And which of them gets the priority? First, education through cyber technology? Can it not be attained instead by videodiscs? After all, a disc costs only about five pesos. And classrooms can be provided with TV sets and video players. The disc program has an advantage because each teacher can manage the speed of the program to match the learning abilities of the pupils. In the cyber program, I assume that it will originate from a national, provincial, city or town source. The individual schools would have to keep pace with the rest in the same areas.

Attitude of a servant

Luke 17:5-10

Our parachutes in life

MANY of us are familiar with parachutes – devices for slowing down the descent or the falling speed of persons or things dropping from airplanes. Parachutes are made of fabric (initially silk and now nylon), shaped somewhat like umbrellas. They are generally carried folded in packs and are released by rip cords. These parachutes are now adopted as standard airplane equipment by the military. Not many know that it was Leonardo da Vinci in 1495 who first came out with the idea of a parachute. However, it was only in 1783 when the first successful parachute jump from a high tower was made by a Frenchman named Louis Sebastien Lenormand. A parachute makes the difference between life and death. If a parachute is not properly packed and does not work (it fails to open when the parachutist drops from an airplane in the sky), death for the parachutist may result.

Religion & politics in America
By ADRIAN E. CRISTOBAL

ROMAN Catholic Archbishop Raymond Burke of Chicago didn’t say whom he would vote for in the US presidential elections but he would not administer Holy Communion to Rudolf Giuliani because of the former New York mayor’s stand on abortion rights. Other archbishops disagree, saying that receiving communion is a matter of individual conscience. Burke, in response, said that his was not a judgment, that it’s between God and the individual, but Church teaching, to his mind, doesn’t qualify a pro-abortionist to receive Holy Communion.

Old and famished
By DR. BRIX PUJALTE

AGAIN, the myth: Only children suffer from malnutrition. Sure there’s that ubiquitous 30second infomercial of a poor child with a bloated stomach and infested with flies. "Send help now!" the ad ends. But if we look around us, our very own aging parents, uncles and aunts may be malnourished and we don’t even know it.
