Twenty years ago, well-known designer JMoreno, or Pitoy Moreno, graduated from UP Diliman’s College of Fine Arts and went on to become an icon in Philippine fashion.
Even in his early years, Pitoy realized that he wanted to help other students who wanted to get a college education but couldn’t afford it.
He planned to put up a scholarship foundation through which he would share his blessings and help build a future for these young people.
His good friend Imelda Cojuangco, who has a big heart for the poor and talented, agreed to become the founding chairman.
Twice a year, the foundation selects its scholars because of the UP two-semester program.
The special requirements of the scholarships is that the scholars be enrolled in Fine Arts and the College of Medicine in the state university.
The College of Medicine students need help because of the high matriculation, and other expenses of their education.
This year, the foundation has added four scholarships for Agriculture students covering their tuition fees and boarding expenses. As Moreno pointed out — "we need farmers."
Moreno’s buddy, architect Gerry Contreras, invited the foundation to hold its awarding ceremonies in his penthouse at Gercon Plaza in Makati. It turned out an enjoyable gathering of friends and scholars.
The merienda and mass with Fr. Mac Reyes was followed by singing with the family choir of opera singer Enero Santos.
