"A Thousand Splendid Suns" Power Book Club pick for October
The Power Book Club puts the spotlight on A Thousand Splendid Suns, bestselling author Khaled Hosseini’s follow up to the critically acclaimed The Kite Runner.
Set against the backdrop of the turbulent Islamic nation of Afghanistan, the sweeping novel brings to the forefront the plight of Afghan women who were brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women who had to go through the horrors of violence, misery, treachery and Taliban cruelty. Maimed and broken by the tragic events that sweeped their nation, the two women form a powerful bond of sisterhood that gives them hope for redemption.
With heart-wrenching and suspense-filled narratives, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of selfsacrifice, and that in the end, it is love or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
Powerbooks invites readers to join in the Power Book Club discussion of A Thousand Splendid Suns on Oct. 26 (Friday), 6:30pm at Powerbooks Trinoma.
