Jesus P. Estanislao
Our country needs many more responsible citizens who live out their lives selflessly promoting the progress of our people.
Each one of us may be able to do very little; but out of these many small pieces, a bigger and better reality for all Filipinos, without any exception, in the Philippines can be built. It is necessary for each one of us to do our share and contribute whatever we can to our nation’s cause. It is even more productive if, in addition, we could work more in solidarity with each other, in more productive mutual support for each other’s best efforts.
Where do we begin to become so productive? This answer has been given, over and over: We need to be patriotic, selfless, and "faithful in little things." We need to "give to each moment – even to apparently ordinary moments – the dynamic echo of eternity." In other words, even the small things we do can have very long-term consequences. These can be for the benefit of our people, if we are selfless in serving others and through them our country as well.
We can make a truly big difference, by being selfless in living our life and carrying out our ordinary work. We ought to think less of our self-interest and more of the welfare of others. "When you really trample on your own self and live for others, you will become a good instrument in God’s hands," for the country’s development.
In such selfless service for our country’s sake, we need to be ambitious. We need to "make up our mind to set (our country) ablaze with a love that is pure", i.e. a patriotic love that is free of the taint of selfishness. Indeed, our ambition should be nothing less than to shower the benefits of genuine development on all of our people. Then, we should work hard and well so as to "make (our people) happy by bringing them really closer to God" and to genuine development.
In the process, of course, as we serve other people as selflessly as patriotic love demands, we end up becoming very happy ourselves. We may have to put in a lot of effort into "our prayers, our sacrifices, and our actions", by which we "show a constant concern" for our people and our country. These efforts may have to be endured with heroism, but even in the process of enduring them we would already be rewarded with personal satisfaction and happiness. It is by "emptying our heart" of self interest that it can then be "filled with God," and with happiness, i.e. with the satisfaction that we are doing our patriotic duty faithfully.
This satisfaction we need to share with many more of our fellow citizens. They too can be faithful in the little things that they do each day. They too can undertake them with a spirit of selfless service to others and for our country’s sake. They also can "correspond to God’s love by being faithful" and patriotic: It is this patriotic love – expressed in deeds of selfless service everyday in connection with the discharge of our ordinary duties – that we "transmit to other people."
Such concrete and specific ways of showing our love for our people and our country would yield very productive outcomes, which should be the legacy we leave for many future generations of Filipinos to enjoy.
