Versatility is said to be an edge in photography since one can shoot multiple types of subjects and concerns.
However, only those who know the proper time to click the camera and capture exactly what should be frozen have the right to claim they’re truly versatile.
Ed Simon’s photography is one that banks on these two aspects that whatever category he touches, the output always holds up. It’s like being an effective athlete at different sports essentially because of the proper discipline one is practicing, whether he is into basketball, fencing, golf, or bowling.
Ed’s photographs are avant-garde, arresting images that put to a still those rare moments with correct timing and accuracy. His shots vary from those taken during weddings, advertising shoots, fashion events, food feature, and what-not.
"I was attracted by the concept that photography can do. It amazed me how it can capture light and history," utters Ed who took Fine Arts at the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila and learned photography when he was still in college. His instructor then was Vic Sison whose name is known and respected around the photography industry.
Though he is quite good in almost every kind of shoot thrown at him, some recent exposure to food photography endeared him to its taste. "I can do all types of photography like I love to photograph motor sports and cars. But after doing a coffee-table book about food last year, I guess I’m into food photography now."
For the book alone, he had to shoot more than 60 restaurants in just three months!
This could mean he had the privilege of eating the delicious offerings at these food places. He did. But for someone who believes that taking pictures is an exciting fixation since childhood, what matters more is the experience of shooting them, having been able to play around the table and provide menus the photographic glow to be appetizing, or even more.
With the assistance of a motivated team of back-ups, Ed Simon photography boasts of the kind of distinction only a highly skilled professional squad can create.
The man at the helm admits that his ultimate goal is to have huge exhibits here and off Philippine shores. But with the way he’s been achieving accomplishments like covering the World Formula One Championship in Suzuki, Japan and winning twice in the Annual Photoworld Manila for Best Exhibition only show his targets are not far-fetched.
"I was a member of this all-Filipino team who covered a huge wedding in Malaysia," he proudly recalls.
When asked about the privileges he get from having photography as work, Ed notes, "Imagine you have the power to tell prominent people (presidents of company, generals, models, politicians) to stand, turn left or right, when to smile or not!"
This happily married father of two works on a discipline that merges manual-analog and digital technology. He says he’s using digital since it makes the workflow smoother. Yet he treats his shots as manual.
As for his affiliation, Ed is a proud member of Shutterbugs Camera club. His membership here has widened his knowledge of the craft, so much that he feels the need to share his thoughts through seminars. He already conducted lectures in various colleges and universities such as Perpetual University, St. Paul ’s College, PUP, etc. He also became a part-time instructor at TUP, his alma mater.
Ed’s gallery of photos is described as full of fun, relaxing, and interesting for many reasons. Two of these are his knack for calculating well when it’s time to click the shutter and his eye for things worth-capturing.
"In photography, you get to enjoy your job to the fullest and you get paid," that’s taking it from someone who loves photography and enjoying its perks.
