Funeral march passing through it when it gave way

LEYTE, Leyte — Congressman Andres "Andy" Salvacion (PDSP) of the third district of Leyte is seeking an investigation on the collapse of a hanging bridge in Villaba, Leyte.

He is asking the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) office in Eastern Visayas to conduct the investigation.

Congressman Salvacion said he had asked the DPWH to conduct an investigation on the collapse two weeks ago of the hanging bridge in Barangay Libagon, Villaba town to find out the cause, noting that the construction was funded by the national government.

Salvacion said many people drowned when they plunged into the river when the bridge collapsed, noting that a funeral procession was passing through the bridge when it gave way.

"The dead was lucky in that the funeral car carrying the corpse to the cemetery had just crossed the bridge when it collapsed," Salvacion said.

Salvacion said he will have the matter investigated to find out if the construction was substandard or the materials used were of poor quality.

"People of Villaba town who joined the funeral procession complained to me of the horrible incident that they experienced, and I assured them that this matter will be properly investigated," the congressman said.

"Those responsible for the poor construction of the bridge should be punished," Salvacion also said.

He has asked the DPWH office in Villaba town to immediately fix the bridge, saying the people of the neigbhoring barangays are now inconvenienced as there is no span to link the villages to each other.
